McMurphy's final report:
quote:

CHICAGO -- BCS commissioners will recommend a seeded-four team playoff that will feature the "best four teams" as chosen by a selection committee, sources told CBSSports.com Wednesday.

The Presidential Oversight Committee ultimately must approve the playoff on Tuesday in Washington D.C.. The playoff will begin after the 2014 regular season.

I agree. you would think that #9 would have less of a case but the top 4 isnt going to clear up anything. it will make it worse. After LSU beat Bama, how far did they drop? Lets say they stayed at #4 untill seasons end. You have the #5 team undefeated form the WAC left out. Its easy to say that that team is garbage and plays no one (I say this still of Boise) but no one really knows.

ETA: this isnt a jab at the rematch from last season, just an hypothetical of a top 4 play off

This sounds pathetic.

Just think, if we had this a few years ago - a selection committee could easily have consisted of Craig James, Lee Corso, Lou Holtz, Bobby Bowden, Jim Tressel and Pam Ward. Coaches, commentators and an announcer. Akin to that B.S. poll they use for the BCS - the Harris poll...do you become a member of the Harris poll if you donate to the Republican party?

this committee thing will probably only last a few years - after that they will end up with a 6 or team playoff

They could really skip the middle stage if they went to the top four ranked conference champions (or independent) and top two ranked at large teams - that would be a six team playoff that would work pretty well and allow you to give conference champs the home field the first two rounds

The BCS for the most part got the top 2 teams right. What happens when you have 2 undefeated bcs conference teams and 4 or 5 1 loss teams? This will fail terribly.

fricking stupid, here comes more controversy, the requirements for entry need to be concrete rules to prevent fan outcry

6 is plenty. But I think we need 6 so at-large teams won't bitch and the SEC won't bitch about deserving an extra non-conference champ team in the playoff.

6 would be my preference and I think we all looked at this awhile back and the last 15 years of rankings...any team outside the Top 6 - wasn't realistically considered having a legit shot or beef about playing for the title.

Joe Strauss ?@JoeStrauss
Nails it. RT @hthill: Here's formula: SEC Champ + SEC Runner up + Next best SEC team, plus next highest ranked team = Top 4 teams in country

Well then you'll have a house divided. SEC can go play with itself and the rest of the conferences will break off...they too like to make money.

Don't forget - this isn't about stupid bragging rights...this is about money. Every conference needs a piece of the pie for this thing called college football to survive...monopolies kill the sport.

My point. How do we know and undefeaed WAC team at the #4 spot in the playoffs is beter than the 4 th place sec team ranked 13th that lost to #1, #2, and #6?

They are making it clear that they want to pick "the best teams in the country" but its up to opinion. big play off answers that

It'll still be controversy year in and year out with the team ranked at 5.

One year where it would get hairy was 2006

12-0 Ohio State (B1G champ)
12-1 Florida (SEC Champ)
11-1 Michigan
10-2 LSU
10-2 USC
11-1 Louisville (Big East Champ)
11-1 Wisconsin
12-0 Boise State (WAC Champ)
10-2 Auburn
11-2 Oklahoma (Big12 Champ)
10-2 Notre Dame
10-3 Arkansas
10-2 West Virginia
11-2 Wake Forest (ACC Champ)
10-2 VaTech
10-2 Rutgers
