Most underrated/ under appreciated accomplishment in baseball. ESPN will prob mention it while the credits roll on sportscenter. Takes away precious airtime from uncontested dunks, soccer penalty kicks and 27 pitchers combining for the dead horse that is, the no hitter.

Especially when your double was actually a single.

Are you serious? Do you know how hard it is just to hit a triple, much less the rest in the same game.

it's just an overrated accomplishment.

yea it's a helluva day at the plate, but it's not more impressive than a no hitter. That's ridiculous

You're absolutely right; which is why NO ONE said it was more impressive than a no hitter.

the probability of an average MLB player hitting for a cycle against an average team in a game is approximately 0.00590%; this corresponds to about 2.5 cycles in a 162-game season with 30 teams.[8]

Seems fairly impressive to me.

I understand your argument, but with it now being the era of the pitcher, I'd have to say that it is still pretty damn impressive!

It is very impressive, but those who "downplay" the achievement of hitting for the cycle are, I believe, noting that is a combination of a remarkable achievement and a statistical anomoly.

Is going 4 for with a 1b, 2b, 3b, and HR better than going 4 for 4 with 2 HR and 2 2b? Late in the game, the result that favors a hitter achieving the cycle, in rare instances, is not as favorable to his team and its objectives as other outcomes.

For instance:

quote:

On May 6, 2003, Young went 5-5 against the Baltimore Orioles hitting two homers and two triples, and a single. When he came up to bat in the ninth, he was a double short of the cycle. Instead, he hit his second triple of the night off Buddy Groom. "It crossed my mind, but since the game was close, my individual accomplishment took a back seat," Young said. "The run is the important thing.

Dimitri Young wiki

In that case, the player really stretched to get a triple when stopping at second would have given him the cycle. He had a better night, and did more to help his team win, than he would have by hitting for the cycle.

But the cycle is absolutely a great accomplishment and I am thrilled for A. Hill.

Don't forget, a no hitter is a team effort. Hitting for the cycle is not.
