CNN article
I was thinking the same thing earlier, wasn't Tiger supposed to lead a wave of blacks to the PGA. He's 15 or so years into his career. 5 and 6 yr olds would be in their early 20's and competing in the NCAA's. The CNN article has some points but I think it parallels baseball more than anything. Culturally there's sports that people enjoy playing more than others. Golf hasn't caught on like they thought it would.
I'd figure if Tiger was more socially aware he'd help pave the way for some of these young up and comers, but I bet he sees them more as compeition than anything.

golf is kinda expensive compared to basketball, no matter how great tiger is

There are a ton more minorities playing the game vs 15 or 20 years ago. Somebody needs to tell CNN that its hard to make the pga tour.

Golf takes a lot more practice than Basketball where most player are naturally talented.
Basically basketball is easier to be good at so they choose that.

This. I'm black and I started playing when I was 17 when Tiger turned pro. I've quit like 15 times but I keep going back. The shite is hard.

You really going to try to blame Tiger for this at all?

Black youth doesn't think his shoes are cool.

Go play a cheap course and you'll see plenty of them hacking their way around

There may not be a lot in the PGA but theyre playing else where. Had a group of about 20 come through yesterday at the atchafalaya.

1.) Reality is, golf isn't a cheap sport. Most children in the low-income areas can't afford the gear or the lessons, black or white. It's a country club sport.
2.) Golf is still competing against the big three sports, and takes just as much time, if not more to work on. 15 years isn't going to change an entire culture, or even 15% of the peoples preference.
3.) Expect there to be more, at some point in the future.
Most black folks, are just getting into the sport. There is going to be some lag time involved. Golf is a game of knowledge, moreso than the other sports. You have to know the approach, and it's a trial-and-error type deal.
My generation of black folks who are interested/play, early 20's, grew up watching Tiger, but it didn't grow overnight for everyone-it took time. My dad was able to send me to lessons and we played, but I'd say most others parents weren't going/able to spend the money for a set of Taylor Made kids clubs and lessons.
A guy like myself, who is a decent player and can/will be able to afford to get my children lessons, at the earliest age possible, will do so.
I may be wrong, but that's generally how I see it working.

Excellent posts.
All you need to play basketball is a ball and a place to play (and there are plenty of courts). Same for football.
You can't just go out front and hit a golf ball. You need the clubs, you need a golf course, you need a tee time, etc.
Plus there are a lot fewer roster spots out there. Most high schools have a football and basketball team...golf, not so much. There are over 10,000 football players in Division I-A alone.
