Roku.com has a deal they are running today only in which you can buy a RokuHD box, an HDMI cable, and 6 months of Hulu Plus for $80 plus tax.
This model normally retails for $60 and Hulu Plus normally runs you $7.99 / month.
The RokuHD box is a wireless streaming device used with Hulu Plus, Netflix, Crackle, VuDu, and many other "channels", some of which are free and others are pay subscription.
This particular model is a 720p one which requires wireless internet, as opposed to other models which offer up to 1080p and can accept an Ethernet cable.

They have this model Roku at our Walmart for 60 bucks. However, my DVD player died and for about 40 bucks more the new Blu-Ray players have the same and more capability as the high end Roku. In this light, is there still a compelling reason to opt for the Roku?

Depends on what you want. If you want a device built to stream, get the Roku. If you buy, rent, or own a lot of DVD's, then get a blu-ray player. Personally, I don't buy DVD's or really rent them; so, if I were to get one, I would get a Roku. Roku's are made specifically for streaming.
