I am totally against trademark law anyway, but I guess that's a Poli Board issue. However, these people are really protective of the "12th Man" term.
and some fan reaction here to a Washington Post article from yesterday:

According to an A&M spokesperson, the university's external trademark counsel is looking into the issue with RFK Stadium, home of DC United. A former university employee recently attended a game there and sent A&M a picture of a sign reading "Home of the 12th Man" that was hanging in the arena

20,000 attendance doesnt make a 12th man. Its not even a thing you can throw around but it started at Texas A&M because of actual fan support for a team that plays a real game and not prancing around like a bunch of grass fairies playing a euro nancy sport....You wouldnt know real fan passion if it walked up and slapped you in your fat face. Few if any professional sports fanbases do.

Loyd:
You must be a communist since you obviously don’t believe in property rights. Texas A&M University owns the trademark 12th Man/Home of the 12th Man. It is the property of the university. As it stands right now, Americans are still allowed to own personal property....You sir are the perfect example of the ignorance of today’s main stream media. If allowed to continue on its current path, your industry will be the downfall of the greatest nation the world has ever seen.

So they decided to pick on someone smaller?

I just registered "handbags at ten paces" with the patent office.
I expect Ian Darke, Ray Hudson, et al to compensate me, or cease and desist.

I just trademarked "half-chance."

I'm all for trademark law and protections. But this whole "12th Man" issue is fricking ridiculous.

The Seahawks pay them for the rights to use it

Do they own the trademark for Jizz-Jar too?

Are you fricking serious?
That's alright.... I trademarked "10th in the SEC", so they'll have to pay me every time they write up a media guide.

Seattle has acknowledged TAMU’s ownership rights in the trademarked phrase and TAMU has granted a license to Seattle to use the mark. Seattle will not have to change the marking in its stadium but will have to place a statement citing TAMU’s registered mark in any broadcasts that feature the mark ’12th MAN’.

No, it’s bigger than that. It’s about the rule of law, and the inviolable nature of a trademark, and the importance of tradition, and the place of school pride and community service. It’s about being a real journalist, and treating your subjects with the respect and research they deserve, and not being a dang Communist who likes fairy sports.
Well stated by the writer.
They literally freaked out about a sign that barely anyone notices, that's probably
Then again the Aggies freak out when you mention the mere notion of homoeroticism as it applies to their all-male cheerleaders making easily misconstruable hand gestures.

Yup.
quote:
Originally, the Seahawks used "12th Man" without permission, but in 2006 following a prominent playoff run of their own, the team agreed to a $100,000 initial payment to A&M, plus a $7,500 yearly payment for the trademark's use.

quote:Yeah, it is kinda interesting how some of their fans quickly made sure to point out that soccer was for grass fairies.
