I know I know I'm late but what a series! I'm hooked this is one of the best tv series I've seen in a long time. Oh and :csb:

Just wait, it gets better. Season two has been amazing.

I watched the first season back-to-back after it was over, great series, got me to get the books.
Just know that Season 2 is a bit slower than the first one, but I hear it's going to close pretty epic so we'll see.
It's still a great show though.

Are the books a good read? And if so how much do they differ from the show?

They are great. It's high fantasy (obviously) so if you like that sort of thing they are written extremely well.
They differ a bit but Season 1 for the most part follows the story CLOSELY. Obviously the books are far more descriptive and the backstories and details are far more fleshed out in the books. Season 2 they introduced a few differing elements and left out a few key moments I feel (I'm just about to finish Book #2 Clash of Kings now).

As the other poster said, the books go in to more detail of each story. I'm about 200 pages through the first book, and it's still a good read even though I know what's about to happen.
