Bud Selig raises possibility of Oakland A's leaving Bay Area

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig says it's up to Oakland owner Lew Wolff to decide whether to consider additional sites for a new ballpark for the Athletics, leaving open the possibility of a move outside the Bay Area.

Speaking Thursday after a quarterly owners' meeting, Selig said there's no timetable for resolving Oakland's dispute with the San Francisco Giants. The Giants are preventing the A's from building a ballpark in San Jose, which is part of the Giants' territory.

Baseball has been reluctant to approve relocations. When the Montreal Expos became the Washington Nationals after the 2004 season, it was the first shift since the expansion Washington Senators transformed into the Texas Rangers in 1972.

Asked whether the A's would consider other relocation possibilities, Selig responded: "You'd have to ask Lew Wolff. That's really his decision to make."

Twenty-three teams have opened ballparks since 1989, and the A's and Tampa Bay are the only two teams still seeking new stadiums. Wolff would be allowed to consider other sites within the A's territory -- such as downtown Oakland -- but approval from MLB would be needed for a move outside the territory.

"It depends where they'd be. They could be all over the world, for that matter," Selig said. "They need approval. We have to go through an approval process. It just depends on where they're moving to."

Selig said last month he hoped the A's and Giants would resolve the matter themselves, but there's no indication that will happen.

"Both clubs yesterday made a presentation to the executive council, but there's nothing new other than that," Selig said.

He added that he can't provide a timetable and responded "no" when asked whether some kind of decision was approaching.

How, exactly, is San Jose in the Giants' territory and not the As' territory? SJ is south of Oakland, closer to there than San Fran.

Do you realize how many supporters the Giants have in San Jose? Not just fans that go to the games, buy merchandise and watch them on TV.. but a lot of their major sponsors are headquartered in San Jose and the south bay area.

It's also where the majority of the 4 million people in the greater bay area live and work. The area has a huge impact on the Giants and to put a team there so accessible would hurt SF greatly.

The only way I see the Giants stopping the fight against Oakland moving is for the Giants to get a share of the new TV deal they would certainly get and maybe even some of the gates and sponsorship.

Or.. former A's owner Wally Haas gave the Giants the rights to San Jose in the early '90s. He gambled, thinking the Giants would eventually completely leave the Bay area in order to get out of Candlestick. Which actually almost happened. Thank God the Florida Marlins ended up coming into existence or I'd be watching the Giants play in the NL East.

So you left that fact out. You also failed to mention that the Giants flagship TV station is headquartered in San Jose as well as there being SF's single-A farm team there.

honest question: Are people going to suddenly quit going to Giants games or being Giants fans just because the A's moved to San Jose?

If you answer no, then the Giants are being bitches.

Absolutely some people will. A new ballpark in downtown San Jose would draw a lot of fans and a lot of Silicon Valley sponsorship.

Is there a market out there that Oakland could move to and be successful (money-wise...not necessarily on the field). I'm having trouble of thinking of a market in the US that would be able support a baseball franchise that doesn't already have one.

We've had a couple threads the past few weeks about where the Rays could move. Both started by Moustache I think. Montreal is the only feasible place, IMO. I'm sure he'll be here soon to go off on another rant about the issue.

I wonder if San Antonio could pull it off. Then again the Rangers and Astros would block the move.

The only market that I see working besides San Jose is Portland. It's surprising how that city only has one pro sports town despite its size and affluence.

FWIW, I didn't realize all of what you said. Since you answered the last question, I can totally see where the Giants are coming from, actually. I didn't realize San Jose was that important to them. I still think it could work and not hurt the Giants much, but I guess that remains to be seen.

Montreal is really the only feasible place. MAAAAYYYBE Austin, but I doubt it.

do the A's plan on playing hacky sack or soccer? Otherwise, moving a baseball team or football team to Portland is a fricking awful idea.

And you think Montreal is better? Especially with how much of a shithole Olympic Stadium is and how they failed to draw fans to the ballpark even when their team were winning.
