Weekly Film Study

I have been interested in proposing this idea on here for awhile, but I have never gotten around to it.
I just wanted to see if there is any interest with people that have already watched a lot of films or others who are interested in watching more films.
Basically, what we could do is have one film a week that a few of us would decide on each week. Then everyone can have about 2-3 days to watch it before we start analyzing it and discussing it. We can discuss everything from acting, writing, cinematography, to scores. Post any screen shots that appear important to the meaning of the film. Whatever we want to do, really. At the end of the week we pick a new film to watch for the next week's study.
This would only really work if a lot of us are interested and keep up to date with watching each week's film. We can group the movies by style, country, director, or something else. We could have Italian month or Wim Wenders month, for example. The films we would choose would mostly be not current and sometimes ones that a lot of us have never seen.
Anyway, if there is interest I would love to do something like that so we could all hear each other's opinions and analysis. I think it really increases the value of the film.

I would love this. We could also pick some of the great movies on Netflix instant queue first so people will have easy access. However, be warned this board gets darker and darker by the day. A thread on The Third Man will have less hits than the 4th catwoman thread on the first page. It's unfortunate. A weekly film study could renew my interest in the M/TV board again.

Only if we can study "Purple Rain" first.

Great movie. I'm surprised it's not more popular on this board.
Sounds like a fun idea. I generally like these participatory threads the best.

Sounds like a great idea. I don't get Netflix so I may not participate in many of the discussions but I'll try to chime in from time to time when a movie I know or have access to pops up.

Yep. That is part of the reason I am interested in doing this. We would definitely pick movies on Netflix Instant and/or Hulu Plus to start.

This has been suggested so many times. I hope this time it can finally be done.

MAJOR bump on this.
Unfortunately, we never got this going. (My fault. I became extremely busy just after I posted this.) It has been on my mind again lately and I was wondering if all of you who posted in this thread, if you are even still on TD, would still be interested in this. I really want to bring back some of the old magic to this board. Any other additional posters who are interested would make it even better.
This time I promise not to bail, but all of you have to help to hold me accountable.

I started this twice and it never took off. It's almost impossible to do since everyone has different watch schedules. You need like 2 weeks to give everyone a chance, but by that time all the early watchers have forgotten about it.
If you do 2-3 days, no one can watch. 1 Week may be plausible, but that was the first one I tried.
I will try, and I probably won't be an every week watcher, but I'll give it a go if someone organizes it.

I would be interested in this.

I'd be interested. My analysis would probably be shite but I'm always looking to expand the ol' movie catalog.

A week is definitely better. I'm thinking maybe have two a month and start on more mainstream films to try to get more involved. I think if we start on something like Gaslight (totally random example) participation will be low. So maybe start on something like Sunset Boulevard or Chinatown and work deeper from there. Just a thought.
I know there are a solid 50 people on this board who are very interested in film. And hopefully more. Unfortunately, they are disappearing because this board is being completely overrun by television. Hmm reflecting real life trends? Right now almost every thread on the first page is a thread about a TV show.
The two movies of the month can still be related and each month's discussion thread would need to be stickied for this to work I think. More will see the thread and want to get involved.

Come on. Your analysis is great in the Mad Men threads!
