Any multipercussionists, or more specifically, conga players here?

I have been a drummer since age 9 and am just NOW branching out to congas based on a request.

If you have made this jump, what did you practice to expedite the learning process? AND, anything you did to speed the process of getting your hands used to the pounding?

Also, what model(s) are you playing? Are you using standard, cowhide, mule hide or synthetic heads?

I never really played Set, after i graduated high school I got into playing djembe and Cajon. I dont really do anything special though because I normally just play for fun or church. I watched a few videos when I first got my cajon to get the basics down but then I just put my own style into what I play.

djembe and Cajon
Those are both pretty cool. Cajon is certainly getting more popular in the drum cirles and of course djembe is a staple there. I may add both of these later depending on where the evolution takes us.

I was hoping to get into a conversation with someone who has experimented with the head/skin choices for congas as well as experience with the different manufacturers and materials. Off to the drummer message boards.
