No, it's like a parking meter... It's illegal to put quarters in other people's meters... same with houses.

Yep and after 3 years they can hire a lawyer and try to obtain the property.

Yes, my aunt does it for my grandmother ETA: She does not send the check in for her or anything. She just gives her a bunch of money to cover it.

Sure. But, it's a gift for gift tax purposes and only the owner of the property can deduct the taxes.

Sometimes foreclosed houses come with years of back property taxes which the new owner can be stuck paying even though someone else owned the propery at the time. So yes, in this case you would be paying someone else's property taxes. Had this happen to a friend who is fighting it but currently losing that battle.

Most definitely, I've lived in a family owned house and just payed the taxes as "rent"

This in Louisiana. You can pay the back taxes and after 3 years of unpaid taxes you can try to take control of the property.

Well, I was going to go pay mine today. Thought I would knock my fiance's out too since she's at work. Do they care where the money comes from? It's the same account.

There has to be a tax sale for the 3 years to apply in Louisiana. If you just randomly pay someone's property taxes, you cannot claim ownership no matter how many years you pay. You may have a reimbursement claim.
