My treatise on Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas

I took this long, because Fallout 3 annoyed the crap out of me when it came out. So after I completed the main mission, I put it down, and never played it again. . .or really even thought much about it.

It had nothing to do with Fallout, other than superficial connections.

I bought F3 GoY edition. I must concede that the DLC added alot to the game, but still nothing that made it feel like a Fallout title. The DLC MQ's were so much better than the F3 MQ. It isn't even close.

New Vegas I just started. I bought both Fallout and New Vegas, after a buddy told me that New Vegas was really done by Obsidian, using the Bethesda engine. That sold it for me.

I am very impressed. THIS ONE feels like a Fallout title.

I think New Vegas deserved the title of Fallout 3, but that's just me. Perhaps F3 should have been Brotherhood of Steel 2?

The only difference I noticed was that one was in Vegas and one was in DC.

Yeah I liked 3 better personally. Vegas felt cheap to me.

Currently working on FO3 GOTY edition. I like it. I enjoyed NV as well but never played any of the dlcs.

I liked that the factions changed with different outfits and your weapons didn't break because you locked your bolt to the rear but yeah, Fallout 3 was better to me.

Companions are much better in NV. Mainly because they don't die unless you're playing on hardcore. I noticed I'm repairing my gear a lot more in FO3 than I ever did in NV. Deathclaws in NV are way harder than anything in FO3.

The story, the setting. . .

. . .the opposing factions. . .opportunity costs. . .

And New Vegas is more difficult. F3 was made WAY too easy with "perk per level".

F1 & F2 gave you a perk every 3 levels.

I still made it through Windborn Cave and killed the legendary deathclaw though.

I ventured north of Sloan at level 7.

Figured they scaled them to level like Fallout 3.

Me too. I thought NV combat and customization were much better, but the quests in 3 shat on NV. I much preferred 3.

I think FO3 was pretty legit. On that note, I'm almost done finishing FO1.

Still, FO2 was probably the best of the bunch. Very deep, frequently funny as frick, challenging, just a great game.

I loved both of them but ended up enjoying NV more. I think it is because I'm from there and was recognizing a bunch of places. It was cool to know that I passed by the lodge where all the mutants were every time I would go camping in Mt. Charleston.

I hated that you couldn't snipe in Vegas, and it ruined the game for me. I liked to sneak to higher ground and take out everyone, but on Vegas they'd run right at you.

To me, it came down to the Brotherhood-Enclave storyline in FO3 that made it superior. That is such a big part of the lore, it was exciting to have a say in how things went down. The lessened role of the BoS and non-existant Enclave made NV less interesting to me, but the open gameplay was definitely an improvement. The DLCs for NV, particularly Big Mountain (not including Sierra Madre) were totally awesome and added more to the game.

My game glitched up halfway through too, so I am permanently neutral with all the gangs :/

The game suffered a bit from the telepathic connection gang members had with each other. Just like how Oblivion guards would know you committed a crime even if there were no witnesses, gang relations would suffer if you killed ONE gang member out in the desert.

I tend to favor New Vegas, but I can appreciate what both bring to the table.

They are games that I break out about once a year to play through again. I still play the Sierra Madre DLC with every character, to give you an idea of my commitment level. So much potential with Dead Money, but I can see why it's at the bottom of pretty much everyone's list as far as NV DLC is concerned.

For one thing, I like the characters in the Sierra Madre way more than I do the tribals you encounter in Honest Hearts. Only redeemable aspect of Honest Hearts is the general badassery of Joshua Graham. ETA: Oh, and the survivalist. That guy was a BAMF as well.

I prefer Fallout 3, but I do like a lot of the mechanics introduced in New Vegas. But I can get most of them for FO3 with mods.

For me, D.C. is just a whole lot more interesting than the Mojave/Vegas. NV doesn't have anything close to the Mall. Talon Company and Super Mutants are a hell of a lot more fun than fiends. The Legion and NCR are alright, but they're just too spread out and sporadic.

Both games are weak on character development and plot, but unfortunately that's to be expected when you have open world games. Ultimately the atmosphere of FO3 is more memorable, IMO. I feel like I've been through the Capital Wasteland.
