Teams moving up in the later rounds

I don't understand why a team would trade let's say a 6th round pick to move up 7 spots in the 3rd or 4th round? I know it might be they have a specific player in mind, but it seems like just a waste to give away draft choices. If the plaer was that good to move up in the 4th round to pick him, why not take him with a 3rd round pick?
I don't know, probably just me after a long Saturday night

If a team really wants a certain player and they feel he will be taken by a team in front of them, why not use a 6th for him. Most of the 6th and 7th rounders don't pan out to help your team.

We moved up late for morstead and that worked out pretty well

TIGERSby10...congrats on the new coach. I read an article about him taking over at CL....might be the one to bring the Trojans back to the Gros years.

the two biggest reasons a team does this are these, using Saint examples...
Value Move
Matt Tennant- was graded as a 2nd/3rd Rd C-G prospect. The Saints may not have even had him prioritized as a potential player. In this case the Saints had no pick from the 4th to 6th Rd. Tennant is then available slipping into the last half of the 5th. If you judge that the player won't be around when you pick and is what I call a screaming value... you jump. The Saints traded the 2011 4th Rd to jump back in to get a 2nd Rd player in the 5th. That's a move for value.
Availability Move
Sedrick Ellis- In 2008 the Saints were desperate to get a quality DT. Dorsey & Ellis were the two elite ones rated way higher than anyone else. The Saints sat at #10. They knew neither would last that long. First they tried to trade with KC to get Dorsey and were turned down. Next they turned to frequent trade partner NE. They moved up 3 spots to get the target they wanted. They didn't want to miss on this one.
Trivia: the draft pick for Tennant originated from Denver in trading former Saint guard Montrae Holland.
Trivia 2: The Pats chose Mayo at #10 which was good. The other part was the Saints gave up a 3rd for the Pats 5th. The 3rd was a bust (Crable). The 5th was Carl MFing Nicks

Ellis and Nicks
or
Mayo and Crable
I wonder who won that one?

Might be difficult to understand but, the teams may actually like more than one player out of the 200something that got drafted. Shocking, I know...
