I'm an intelligent person, and several respected posters here will attest to that, and I'm a liberal. Still, I'm embarrassed by welfare queens and people who demand assistance as opposed to people who need and require assistance.
As a conservative, I felt the same way. I was embarrassed by evangelicals and neo-cons, generally.
Can we agree that the bases of the Republican and Democratic parties don't exemplify the more intelligent members of both parties?

Im not even sure what the base of the democratic party is. They have such extremes.
The democratic party comprises of the most well educated and nicest neighborhoods in many of America's metro areas. On the other hand, the democratic party is also the worst, least educated, most dysfunctional neighborhoods of most of America's metro areas.
Coming from Seattle to Baton Rouge has shown me the two extremes.

I guess that deserves clarification. I'm probably moderate when compared to the far right and far left, but liberal compared to the Political Talk board.
Political affiliation is rarely as simple as it seems.

Good friend of mine married a Louisiana girl who for some reason could not move away. He set up shop here and started a consulting company. I was living in South Africa at the time and was pretty much over it. He needed help, so I came down to join the effort. I seem unable to stay in one location very long.

CFBR, that's part of why I like you so much. You realize that the labels mean nothing. I apply labels because they're commonly used, not because I agree with them.
If we all spoke to each other individually about our views, we'd find many more things to agree on than we'd think.

It wasn't the immersion into the cajun-french culture that I thought it would be. Baton Rouge does have great winters though. I'm already plotting my next move. We're trying to expand into a new market but unfortunately, we are limited to state capitols.

I'll never understand people running away from economic policy principles because of religious people in a party. Like they're scared to even be associated with them because it's so "cool" to be "progressive."
