There a few bands that have had a huge impact on my life and i figure that goes for everyone. My list is:
The grateful dead- first time i saw them live was like a religious experience. It was like in the blues brothers where they "see the light."
Blind melon- i always connected with their lyrics and i was really hurt when shannon hoon died
Wilco- ive been listening to wilco for 17 years, they've always been a constant in my live.
Black crowes- another band ive been listening to forever, 20 years. Ive seen them over 30 times live and never had a bad time.
A tribe called quest- i still can recite every lyric to every song on low end theory. Even when i wasnt listening to hip hop, i was rocking tribe.

Weird Al, Metallica, Pantera. In that order. Saw Weird Al twice when I was 25 and felt 8 again. It was awesome. I never got to see Pantera, but saw Down open for Metallica a few years ago. Hetfield came out and played a song with Down. Seeing my two favorite singers from my teenage years on stage together at the same time nearly made me jizz all over myself.

Myself. Of all the musicians who killed over early, Hoon is probably the one I would want to come back most. Would really love to see all the music he would have made..

pink floyd. Before I got into rock music i really only listened to rap (being a 12 year old and all). the first time i heard us and them by floyd my taste in music changed dramatically

Seriously, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, and Metallica all had pretty big impact on my musical taste when I was younger. I'll also throw in my mom listening to Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash as big influences, even though they obviously aren't bands.

The Kinks -- Their late 60s albums are perhaps my favorite run for any band. Village Green Preservation Society has been my favorite album for 30 years.
Elvis Costello -- favorite act of my adolescence.
Gram Parsons. I discovered him very late -- less than 10 years ago. He was a pathway to country-rock, alt.country, and plain ol' country itself.
Perhaps the most important album for me was the VA collection Nuggets, made up of garage rock classics from the mid to late '60s.
Lenny Kaye's liner notes:
Compiled in 1972 by Lenny Kaye (future guitarist for Patti Smith), Nuggets would be a huge influence for the punk/new wave generation of the '70s -- as significant for them as Harry Smith's Anthology of American Music had been for the future folkies of the '50s.
By the time I heard it in the 1980s it was already something of a historical cornerstone, but Kaye's consideration of teen dance bands, surfers, bubblegummers, and other three chord wonders to be just as important as -- if not even more important than -- grimly earnest L.A. singer-songwriters and bombastic English artsy-poetic types unquestionably made its mark on me.

Where do I start. Music is a VERY important part of my life. People say I can't get out of the 60's and 70's. But I don't care.
Anyway....
The DOORS were awesome. The ORIGINAL Poet for what was to come. Cream was UNREAL. CSNY played some great shite. 4 way street is a GREAT LIVE album. Then came the 70's and AEROSMITH. THEIR 1st ALBUM did some things that a TON of bands looked at to get it right. There are so many its hard. ZEP was HUGE. NOBODY HAS DONE IT BETTER. IMO. People can talk the Beatles all they want. With good reason. But that was BUBBLE GUM shitin the EARLY 60's. But SET something good for the rest. I guess.
BUT for ALL-TIME??? I am going with the STONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Ramones
REM
The Cars
Husker Du
I may not listen to them much anymore, but they were the ones that made me realize everything I listened to before was crap.
