Because he interfered with the catcher's opportunity to throw Fields out at 2nd. Easily the right decision

Katz interfered with the catcher throwing to 2nd, therefore, the runner is out.

yes, but katz screwed the pooch with his selfish actions and non awareness of the situation. i hope he gets his arse chewed big time when the game is over. that kind of shite will cost you in a close game.

How was what Katz did considered selfish? He thought it was ball 4 and made to toss his bat to the dugout and walk to first. Unfortunately, it was a called strike 3 and he interfered.

Not sure I'd call it "selfish" but certainly wasn't very aware of the situation to step across the plate to go back to the dugout before the play was over. Fields had such a great jump I don't even think the catcher was going to attempt a throw but then took advantage of Katz stepping across the plate and got the call. Good move by the Bama catcher and poor decision by Katz.

Katz thought he it was ball four (which it could've been), so he began jogging to first base. If it had been ball four, then fields is no infer stealing but advancing on the wal, so there is no interference.

Maybe Katz should've waited for the umps call, but he thought it was ball four and was confident that he'd earned a walk.

i called it selfish because he was only thinking of himself (pissed at the call) and by definition that is selfish. people saying he thought it was ball four didn't get a good look at his face.i could have simply said he had his head up his arse. either way, it probably cost us a run. we have been in a lot of one run games and we are probably going to be in more, maybe a lot more with uk and usce coming up. the guys a player but needs to show better concentration and judgement than he showed.

I think he knew it was called strike 3 b/c to me it looked like he was heading back to the dugout... but I also don't know if he knew Fields was going... that's how it looked to me anyway

he didn't look surprised at the strike call... he looked surprised when he saw the catcher start the move to throw out Fields and when the ump made the interference call
