An NCAA investigation found no evidence of the charge and cleared Brown and Jones of wrongdoing. Earl, who transferred to Kansas in the middle of his freshman season, later recanted the accusation. LSU was put on probation and lost scholarships mainly because of the actions of two boosters

Hate the hire all you want but facts are facts

Jones was cleared of any wrongdoing so it's time to shut your pieholes about 20 years ago

thanks

Wasn't Cam Newton cleared of any wrongdoing? Just saying.

So if Lester Earl said it, then it's true. If you weren't around the program then you'd probably believe that. If you're smart, you'd know a lot of dirty shite went down in the 90s.

Lets hope that they'll at least buy better players than Lester Earl.

Mark me down as saying Johnny Jones is a horrible hire and will be a miserable failure as an LSU basketball coach...I can't believe Alleva succumbed to the pressure from pieces of shite like Collis Temple Jr.

it'll depend on his staff's recruiting ability IMO.

And Calipari has never been directly linked to sanctions at Memphis or UMASS. And on and on with dozens of similar examples.

Rationalize what happened here 20 years ago all you wish. The damage was done and was far reaching and long lasting here.

But now it's done. All I can do is support and hope for the best, which is what I'll do despite my disappointment.

OP, thanks for the link. My first reaction was, yeah if Brown and Jones were cleared by NCAA, why did NCAA hammer LSU with penalties? The last sentence of the quote says that it was a couple of boosters responsible. I do feel that Jones will prove to be a good hire. Don't know if he is a top tier coach, but maybe LSU won't put out the kind of bucks it would take to hire a big name coach, opting instead on gambling that a coach that fits LSU perfectly will be successful enough. I'm actually more optimistic today that LSU made a good hire in that respect.

BTW, anyone know who the boosters were that allegedly drew the NCAA's rath?

Dr. Redfield Bryan and Gus Piazza were two whose names I can remember.

IMHO to think Bryan was acting on his own is/was a pretty big stretch and the product of naivite and wishful thinking on loyal Tiger fan's parts.

And he was left twisting in the wind for his misguided efforts. That never sat well with me.

Dr. Redfield Bryan was permanently banned from contact w/ the program. That's the only one I know of.
