Top 10 Pharmaceutical Sales

This data is from 2010, since it takes awhile to compile as a part of a much larger study of the top 200 pharmaceutical sales. I figured I would start a different sort of topic than normal on Political Talk to give a perspective on how sick this nation is.

Also included is sales figures and manufacturer.

1) Nexium (AstraZeneca, $5.2B, antiulcerant)
2) Lipitor (Pfizer, $5.2B, cholesterol)
3) Plavix (BMS, $4.6B, anti-platlet)
4) Advair (GSK, $3.6B, corticoid)
5) Oxycontin (Purdue, $3.5B, narcotic)
6) Abilify (Otsuka, $3.3B, antipsychotic)
7) Singulair (Merck, $3.3B, anti-asthmatic)
8) Seroquel (AstraZeneca, $3.2B, antipsychotic)
9) Crestor (AstraZeneca, $2.9B, cholesterol)
10) Cymbalta (Lilly, $2.6B, antidepressant)

Viagra is on there somewhere. Viagra is the #19 most prescribed medication that year, with 8.8 million scripts.

Haha. 8.8 million people couldn't get boners last year.

Legal drugs kill more Americans than illegal drugs by a long shot. Also, more Americans die from abuse or mis-use of legal drugs than from auto accidents. Big pharmaceutical does a lot of good, but they prey on the average vulnerable American. And the medical profession is responsible for pushing these drugs to the public.

Speaking of, Doctors are not allowed to be given medical promo items such as pens, notepads etc. anymore since it influences patients when they see doctors using an item with a certain label on it.

Is it juat me, or does anyone else find it disturbing that two of the top ten are antipsychotics? I think getting the treatment you need is a good thing, but that so many need this type drug is suprising.

They can still get speaking fees, comped travel to symposiums, gather "points" in training programs that can be used to pay for "awards", etc... But you're right. Pens and pads are huge no-no.

Its soon to be Latuda as the miracle drug; however, Seroquel is generic.

yah, take more money from me and give it to the leeches of society. they aren't taking enough as it is.

How about this? If you can't afford the medications (mental health or other), then you don't get treatment. The reform we need is for the government to throw away the hundreds of thousands of regulations/laws that they've made that are draining our country financially.

Here is a more accurate list that includes generics and overall prescriptions written. For those who were surprised to see oxycontin at 5. The reality is that hydrocodone/APAP (vicodin, norco) has been #1 for years. Drug list

Table 2 (top prescriptions dispensed) paints a better picture of health-care in America (excluding hydrocodone/APAP at #1 and #3). There are only 2 SSRIs in the top 20.The rest of the drugs in the top 20 are of the type most would expect; antibiotics, blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, asthma, and thyroid drugs.

re: Top 10 Pharmaceutical Sales
One of the problems is that it's too difficult to bring drugs to market due to FDA regulations. It's too damn expensive from birth to death for a drug candidate given all of the failures. There's barely anything coming out of pharma pipelines.

Yes, thalidomide was bad and all, but most of the common OTC drugs (aspirin, tylenol, etc) would never pass FDA muster today due to activating some sort of receptor (COX-2).

On another note, major pharmaceutical companies generally hire only one type of chemist out of universities. They generally only select from a certain "good ole boys" club of famous Ph.D. groups, which is problematic because you get a lack of intellectual diversity.

People rag on pharma for being "evil" but it takes so long and so much effort to produce successful medications.

The answer to this is "Yes" and "No". I know several individuals from so-called famous labs (Dale Boger, EJ Corey, Barry Sharpless), but most of those people actually went into academia and now have their own research groups. But there is also a reason those individuals are held at a premium; training and synthetic expertise. Many of them actually go into academia for the intellectual freedom. There is a huge difference between drug design and drug synthesis. I did my PhD in a medicinal chemistry department (learned drug design, receptor theory, SAR, and some synthesis). But, I did my post-doc in a hard-core organic synthesis lab to hone my synthetic skills.

There is also a good bit of communication/cooperation between academia and industry, at least in my experience. Even though I was in a university setting, much of my post-doctoral work was supported by Eli Lilly.

Some of this was the reason why I went into organic materials and alternative energy devices. Also, no TLC stains required.

What did you work on in your post-doc?
