1987 was a strong year for music IMO. Looking at the alternative selection, it was probably a pinnacle year. It was the moment right before many bands became mainstream or did make the jump.

Some of my favorite alternatives:

The Cult - Electric
Jane's Addiction - Jane's Addiction triple X
U2 - The joshua Tree
Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses
INXS - Kick
Faith No More - Intoduce yourself
Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
REM - Document
The Smiths - Strangeways
The Smiths - Louder than Bombs
New Order - Substance
Husker Du - Warehouse
The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss ME
Chili Peppers - Uplift Mofo Party Plan
Jesus and Mary - Darklands
Midnight Oil - Deisel and Dust
Sinead O'Connor - Lion and The Cobra
Pet Shop Boys - Actually
Love & Rockets - Earth, Sun, Moon
The Mission UK - God's Own Medicine
10,000 Maniacs - In my Tribe
Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician
Public Image Limited - Happy
Laibach - Opus Dei
The Replacements - Pleased to Meet Me
Bryan Ferry - Bete Noire
fIREHOSE - If'n
Siouxsie and The Banshees - Through the Looking Glass
Echo & the Bunneymen - self titled
The Connells - Boylan Heights
Simple Minds - Live in the City of Light
The Alarm - Eye of the Hurricane
Erasure - The Circus
Hoodoo Gurus - Blow Your Cool
Art of Noise - In no Sense? Nonsense!
Cabaret Voltaire - Code
Men Without Hats - Pop Goes the World
Icicle Works - IF you want to Defeat Your Enemy
Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper - Bo-Day-Shus!
Primal Scream - Sonic Flower Groove
The Bolshoi - Lindy's PArty
Gene Loves Jezebal - House of Dolls
ABC - Alphabet city
Skinny Puppy - Cleanse Fold and Manipulate
Nitzer Ebb - That Total Age
Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Front 242 - Official version
DRI - Crossover
Suicidal Tendencies - Join the Army
Rollins Band - Lifetime
The Exploited - Death before Dishonor

Some of what many consider classic rock band releases were pretty strong that year:
Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night
Bruce Springsteen - Tunnel of Love
George Harrison - Cloud Nine
Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation
Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse of Reason
Roger Waters - Radio KAOS
Jethro Tull - Crest of a knave
John Mellencamp - Lonesome Jubilee
Grateful Dead - In the Dark
Rush - Hold Your Fire
Sting - Nothing like the Sun

Rap:
Eric B & rakim - Paid in Full
Public Enemy - BUm Rush the Show
LL Cool J - Bigger and Deffer

Metal was fast approaching the height of its popularity if nto already there:
GNR - Appetite for Destruction
Whitesnake - Whitesnake
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Anthrax - Among the Living
Motley Crue - Hirls, Girls, Girls
Dio - Dream Evil

I know I left some off some metal but it wasnt' my thing. but please add.

Oh let's not forget:
Rick Astley - Whenver you need Somebody
George Michael - Faith

It was a great year for alternative music.

She sells sanctuary was the frickin jam.

I used to draw The Cult and DRI logos all over my folders in middle school. My math teacher thought I was a satanist.

I think Love Removal Machine was the song from Electric.

Maybe Fire Woman?

My favorite all time band.

The Holy trilogy:

Love
Electric
Sonic Temple

But I'm a huge fan of all their stuff. Dreamtime, Ceremony, even their latest stuff.

Simply put, I'm the biggest Cult fan I know.

My buddy just caught them at SXSW in Austin a few weeks ago. He said it was awesome.

Then you're right up there with me!

I've got everything, including the Manor Sessions/Extended Mix discs...

I noticed that their newest album is now available for pre-order on iTunes for $7.99. I got the track "Lucifer" as a free download awhile back, and it rocked.

got em. I bought those way back before they were available as a box set. I bought them separately from a record store in Houston that would import them in from England. That was around 1988-1989.

Zap City and Louie Louie/Wild thing. I had that one from the single Lil Devil.

That was always one of my favorite artworks from them.

Greatest concert ever was The Electric Tour with Guns-n-Roses opening. They played at The Saenger and it was the last show of the tour. Still hard to top that show.

Me, too... probably spent a small fortune on them individually, and then found them years later sold as a complete box set!

Saw them play in New Orleans early 90's (Lenny Kravitz opened); They played the Varsity twice in 2001... great shows (although I wish they would have mixed the set up a little bit for the 2nd show)

Wow...you are spot on here.
Looking back on 1987, it truly was a great year for music, and for me personally.

A turning point in my tastes. From just hard rock/metal to my first forays into alternative, like The Cure, Smiths, New Order, The Cult among others.
