What is the best housing option for a new transfer student?

So my nephew spent 1 semester at Texas A&M and hated it, so after sitting out this semester it looks like he will be transferring to LSU.

He doesn't know anyone at LSU, so a situation where he can meet people and make friends would be optimal. He doesn't seem like a frat star, so I don't think that is a viable option. He's a pretty smart kid who wants to go to med school, so an environment conducive to studying would be a plus.

Do you think he would be better trying to get into a dorm or living off campus? The dorms would be nice for meeting people, but wouldn't a roommate matching service at a place like the Cottages or Woodlands work as well?

In all likelihood I will be footing the bill for him. I'm pretty much an OT baller so I don't mind paying $575 for his share of a 4 br in the Cottages or the Woodlands, but I'm not willing to pay more for him to have a 1 br to himself. Are there any other options I should consider?

Honestly, although I'd never live in a "student" apartment (where you pay per room and live with strangers), it's probably his best option. Those places have a list of applicants and they put people together in 4 bedroom units so he could meet 3 new guys and have an affordable place to live.

Try both of the Campus Crossings, Venue, Commons, Cottages etc.

I would stay away from on campus housing. It is a joke. Cottages are by far his best option. If you never listen to anyone on this board again listen to this first, DO NOT LIVE ON CAMPUS. You will be spending more than $575 a month on housing and it sucks. Cottages are the way to go.
