It was a lose/lose question for him. I can't really blame him for the answer he gave.
Can you imagine the Left's indignation had he answered no? He's already getting blamed for every "scandal" and inappropriate comment any person possibly associated with Republicans or the conservative movement makes. Would have just furthered the hypothetical "war on women" the Republican party is currently raging. For example, see this quote today about Priebus' comments:

I wanted him to tell the truth. It would have been spun by the press but it is not sexist. Romney has to learn that the press won't like him no matter what he says. McCain didn't learn that lesson.

I think the smart answer would have been to treat the question as a ridiculous one, unwarranted for comment by the office of the President, and respond as mentioned, that he respects the right of private businesses to make these kinds of decisions for themselves.
If he really feels the need to make his personal beliefs known, he could also state that he wouldn't belong to such a club even though he respects their rights on this.
There used to be a bar that my dad would hang out at in Norco, La. "Club 99". And no women were allowed. Guys could go there and have a beer, watch a game, play cards in the back, etc. and not worry about women, and more importantly, their wives didn't have to worry about women either. I don't know if that place still exists.
