From Little League in Austin, TX - happened last night (no personal skin in this game):

Here is a snapshot of the setting - taking advantage of the 5 runs per inning limit:

The time is 7:17 and we are home team.

Both teams agreed the game would not have a new inning after 7:20 (because we started 5 min late).

We have one out. We have just scored 4 runs and now have a runner on 3rd base.

Our batter is two pitches into his at bat and I turn to look into the dugout.

Suddenly a ball is flying into the opening where our on deck batters are standing. I was uncertain where the ball came from and turned for clarification. At this moment, I am being told by the umpire (behind the plate) that this is an errant throw by the Nationals and my runner on 3rd needs to advance to home. I asked again for clarification.

At this moment, the National coaches are trying to help clarify that I need to send my guy home from 3rd (and the home plate umpire is in agreement). The home plate umpire’s words were, “There’s a first time for everything.”

So with less than a minute to play (approx 7:19) and only one out, I concede because the umpire is telling me I need to send my guy home. This move now means we will start a new inning before 7:20.

So did the other team just throw the ball into the dugout?

Exactly.

This is kind of like letting the opponent score a TD late in a game in order to get the ball back and a chance at the other end.

However, there aren't "5 run limit" rules in real baseball, so IMO this is not teaching 11-12 year olds real gamesmanship - seams cheap

But of course, I just happened to get copied on an email discussing the legitimacy of it all.

5 run/inning limit?

You referenced 12yo later. I can't believe there are run limits in a 12 yo league. Is that a LL rule? Local league rule?

Seems like a crappy rule!

Wait! Which player threw the ball into the dugout? If it was the pitcher, it should have been ruled a ball and I do not believe the advancement should be required.

Yeah that's a shitty rule, but I would have done the same exact thing.

In to win. And kids enjoy it more when they win. No reason to set there and let the clock run out.

I believe that it is a local league rule.

My first little league game we lost 18-2.

We didn't pout about it...instead we strung off 17 in a row and won the league championship.

this was definetely bush league. Coach probably told the kid to throw it in the dugout to score the run which would of been 5 runs so the other team would get to bat before the time limit was up.

Most little leagues use a run limit per inning nothing new about that

Actually this is the definition of gamesmanship; what it is not, however, is sportsmanship.

Gamesmanship: The art or practice of using tactical maneuvers to further one's aims or better one's position. Being down 4, with the prospect of no more plate appearances, a loss is guaranteed. Throwing the ball in the dugout and conceding the run forces the inning's end, and gives them the slim hope of scoring 5 themselves in their turn at the bat.
