Ryan Schimpf smacked a grand slam as a part of a seven-run fifth inning that the Toronto Blue Jays used to take a 13-8 decision over the Detroit Tigers in spring training action.

I played in his district in HS though I'm a couple of years younger. I had a feeling back then that he was going to make it to the show. He's a great player. He used to drop mammoth bombs for St. Pauls.

Great to hear. I went to HS with Schimpf and its always cool to see someone you grew up with make it to the big time.

Correct, sir. I still remember the playoff game against Hahnville his junior year. Scouts from LSU were in attendance to check out Jordan Brown, the Hahnville pitcher, and Schimpf took him deep on one at bat and hit the fence on another. If it weren't for that game, who knows if he would have been a Tiger great.

You've got to admire a guy who would do whatever he can to help the team win, especially moving from 2B to LF to get Nola into the lineup in 2009.

Schimpf.

Led he team in homers (over Dean), RBIs, doubles, runs and scored. Second to only J. Mitchell in steals. Versatile enough to move from second base to outfield when Lamahieu's defense was suspect. Hit .395 in NCAA Tournament games with six doubles, five homers, 14 RBI and 15 runs.

Clearly the MVP of the 2009 offense, yet definitely under appreciated when he was here.

For sure. He was my favorite player on the 08 and 09 teams.

For posterity's sake, I think it should be mentioned that Lemahieu's move from short to second not only improved SS play (Nola), but also improved second base.

I loved Schimpf as a Tiger, and always reference him when speaking of the '09 team, but he wasn't our best option at second base. He had 2 errors that cost us 4 runs in a Saturday Tennessee game, which was the first of the only back to back games we lost all season.

For posterity's sake, that's completely false. Pretty sure Schimpf only had 3 errors the entire season, and led the team in fielding % after Ochinko (who played 1st base). Lamahieu had NINE errors that season. There's a reason why he's been moved to third base in the minors now; defense was not his strong suit.

Nola was inserted for his defense. We couldn't bench Lamahieu's bat, but there was no way he could play OF. Schipf was quick enough and versatile enough to play OF, so he was the only option for OF.
