Yellow Hammers are pecking on loud stuff trying to attract a girlie worlie. or, so he says.

Gotcha, they're not a protected bird? You can shoot them?
Posted on 4/1/12 at 9:30 am to KingRanch
Yeah they are actually....I mostly try to shoot what they are hammering on but nothing really works. They do this for about a month and get over it...

Spring here, temps are in the mid 40's during the day. It's awesome outside but still a lot of snow in some areas. Took this yesterday in blueberry hills subdivision across the channel from downtown. Still a couple feet of snow.
Everyone is getting their boats ready, or planes and going out to their cabins. Headed to Funter Bay on Admiralty Island next weekend.

I'm so jealous you live up there! Me and my dad are trying to do a public land caribou hunt in this next few years. Any info on location or where to look into going about that?

So this is an actual bird? I was at work the other day and saw a woodpecker popping a metal light pole. I just thought he was dumb...maybe it was a flicker.

Agreed. If I had a good paying job lined up, I would have to consider moving there.

For fairly decent access, I would look at a Denali Highway caribou hunt. In addition to the relative ease of access, the scenery is incredible. Some of it is controlled use areas, so you may have to hike a couple of miles but basically you can land in Anchorage or Fairbanks and drive there within a half day.
Man, on a crisp late August morning, that area is heaven. Great thing about hunting in Ak, you only have to worry about the regulations since you can have access to millions of acres of land. No leases, fences or restricted access. Just make sure you are in the within regulations.
Going to the Kobuk River this summer to catch Sheefish, a whitefish caught in the arctic. They can be found up to 40 lbs and make for some incredible fly fishing.
Denali Highway is number 8. This is the extent of the state road system in Ak.

Thanks Roger! I'll definitely look into that!

Denali Highway is the easiest access to caribou and not bad for moose either. Almost everything else is more remote and you are looking at fly in. The trade off, it's a bit more crowded (Alaska standard for crowded.)

Fly into Anchorage, rent a motorhome and you can be there in 6-7 hours. Great scenery along the way.

Could be. I will say that they are persistent creatures.
When we lived in the mountains west of Golden, had one knocking the piss out of our soffit material so she could make a nest in the styrofoam insulation material.
