Surf fishing (Cocoa Beach, FL) newb.....

So all I have ever done is fresh water fishing but live an hour from Cocoa Beach and we usually end up there a few times a year and for vacation. I'd like to try surf fishing in that area. Seems all I can find on google is charters/guides willing to help you for $200.
Is there a surf fishing for dummies site? I'll need to buy gear and the correct bait/lures and understand more about what I might be trying to catch. Any tips appreciated.

You'll probably be fishing for redfish that are cruising the sandbars chasing baitfish, as well as speckled trout and maybe a jack crevalle or two. I'd go out early on a calm morning(like 5:30 AM or so)and wade out to about belly deep.
Take a gold spoon and toss it a good deal PAST where you are seeing the waves break, and try to run it over that break(which is a sandbar underneath the surface). There is a good chance that there will be some fish on the dropoffs of the sandbar, maybe even a flounder or two.
I'd bring a floating basket($20 at walmarks) and bring a bunch of assorted lures(jigheads, spoons, etc) and if nothing bites try the jetties with some live croaker hooked by the tail about a foot or two from the sinker so that the fish can swim a little ways off the bottom so a predatory fish can see it
Hope it helps

Agree with the spoon idea.
Get an acme kastmaster, they are great for making long casts which will help you on the beach. (silver or gold) Follow 228Tiger's advice on hitting that drop off.

If you can find a bait shop or even a local grocery store get some shrimp to tip on the treble hook on the spoon.
