| Xbox 720 not the only next gen console to lock out used games...PS4 (Posted on 3/28/12 at 3:31 pm)

Sony's 2013-dated new console supposedly codenamed Orbis, will boast system that locks games to single PSN account; no backwards compatibility for PS3 library planned.

Players will not be able to circumvent the system by remaining offline, as the source said users will be forced to be connected to the PSN to boot up their games.
Considering there are probably several million PS users worldwide that don't connect to the internet this would be a dumb move.

How could a company justify locking out a chunk of their customers from a profitability standpoint? Makes absolutely no sense...

yeah, and sometimes I just don't feel like sitting there for 10 minutes waiting for a system update... This would be a stupid move, imo. Without used games, I wouldn't play a quarter of the games I do now. I am not going to significantly increase my spending.

Well, that is retarded. What happens if your console dies? Do you have to buy all new games?

It's connected to your account not your console

I'm sure your new console can be connected to the same account. The games are connected to the account, not the actual console itself.

Yea, that is idiotic. They are basically cutting out the portion of gamers who don't have internet. This really is a lot of fail. I have never owned a Playstation, and I don't think I will buy the PS4.

I doubt it will come to market with all of these stipulations...surely Sony (and mocrosoft, for that matter) isn't stupid enough to immediately alienate every single customer who games offline in one fell swoop. But all of this information just goes to show where the future is headed. The companies want complete control, a la Apple and how restricted its products are. The difference is, a large portion of gamers are kids who don't have their own income to buy all kinds of shite. I think these kinds of ideas gear the industry more to adults than ever before.

According to the article you can still played a used game/game not linked to your account but it will be more like a demo at that point and you will have the option of paying a fee to unlock the full game.

Well they don't make any money off of you playing used games anyway, so they don't care if they lose you.

Think about the economic impact of something like this. Stores like Gamestop would lose all the money they make off of used games. Gamefly would also go out of business since games would only be attachable to a single account.

I wouldn't be in the console crowd if gaming computers wouldn't become obsolete so damn quick At least I can get 3-4 years out of a console No, really though. I will not be getting a next gen console. When the time comes to say goodbye to my PS3 (which is backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games), I will buy a gaming PC.

Gamestop's corporate office just sent in ninja assassins to MS and Sony.

Yea but then they might miss out on more DLC purchases or a customer trying a new series out and buying future sequels of that series. Also, this is going to hurt the new game market as well in the sense that as it is now the used game market dictates that prices drop on a new game after it's been out for a while. You think developers are going to be quick to offer price drops when they don't have the competition of used games?
