Will try to keep it short and sweet. 1997 Lexus LS400. 180K miles. Got a blown head gasket and seals (according to mechanic, and know that it suddenly started losing oil by the quarts).
$2500 in labor only to fix. Hadn't gotten to the parts yet. Says labor alone is 20 hours.
1. Does that sound about right on cost?
2. Is it worth putting that money into the car, or just writing off and junking?
P.S. - It's my kids car, I passed down to him when he turned 16.

125 an hour seems steep. I believe 80-100 is the norm. Not sure on the Lexus but it took me about 20 man hours to do my hemi swap in my jeep, which included welding mounts and exhaust. I'd get another quote. There should also be a guide on the approximate hours to complete the job for mechanics. If it says 20 hrs it really takes about 15.

A little high.
Head gasket replacement is a major repair, but 20 hours of labor seems too much IMO.
I done a headgasket on a Dodge Dakota a couple of years back and it took me 2 evenings of about 3 hours each day, but that was a Dodge and you have a Lexus so

Thanks guys. Loved the care, but it 17 years old. Not sure I wanna spend that kind of money on an old car. How much you think I could sell car to a junkyard for parts?

I sold my 1993 EB 4x4 explorer that I loved dearly for that exact reason, and I'm a mechanic!

Should've posted this on the OT for the Schwartz/meauxjeaux tag team.
I thought you were in your 20s.

You saying I post immature stuff WDE? That supposed to be funny?

Well, sometimes I just think, should a mid thirties dude really even be posting on a message board and if so, should that guy post of the shite I do?
Well, the answer is likely no, but it makes me feel better someone older and wiser than myself does posts similar shite on a message board.

I think the same thing, WDE. But I have to say, if you can weed through some of the nonsense on here, there are some pretty witty and entertaining people that post here. I'd put you in that group.

I just said that in the hopes you might help find me a good deal on a used car for my son.

Get a room you two old dudes.
I'm looking to sell a 1998 honda civic with low mileage 85k. I bought it used from some old lady in the Bronx several years ago. It's a standard transmission which is great for young fellas to learn. Runs great and gets 30 mpg. I'm upgrading to an SUV due to the expansion of my clan.

If you don't mind, shoot me an email at festus.fetus@gmail.com, and let me know how much you want for the car, and maybe a pic. (of the car)

When the repair costs more than the value of the car (when running) it's time for a new car.

Too high. Get another quote. $125/hr is ridiculous. Where are you located?
