"John Carter" loss expected to be $200M.

The Walt Disney Co. on Monday acknowledged in a statement that the movie's poor performance at the box office likely will force Disney to take a $200 million writedown. The company expects its studio divison will post an operating loss of as much as $120 million in the second fiscal quarter of this year.

"John Carter," based on an Edgar Rice Burroughs character, was made for about a quarter-billion dollars;marketing costs were another $100 million on top of that. But the movie grossed only $30.2 million domestically during its first weekend of release, taking in a measly $13.5 million its second.

The picture was brighter overseas, grossing around $126 million abroad in the 10 days since its March 9 release.

“In light of the theatrical performance of John Carter ($184 million global box office), we expect the film to generate an operating loss of approximately $200 million during our second fiscal quarter ending March 31," the company said in a statement. "As a result, our current expectation is that the studio segment will have an operating loss of between $80 and $120 million for the second quarter."

The writedown means "John Carter" is one of history's biggest flops.

It rates alongside such stinkers as "Mars Needs Moms," a 2011 movie that cost $150 million to make and grossed $39 million worldwide; "Ishtar," the 1987 disaster that cost $55 million to make and grossed $14 million domestically and "Heaven's Gate," the 3 hour 39 minute 1980 bomb that cost $44 million to make and grossed $3.48 million domestically.

Finally a movie that looked completely retarded gets what it deserves. I just wish the same could be said for others..ie) Jack and Jill....

John Carter wasn't THAT terrible. I've certainly seen much worse. Think it deserved just to make its money back, but nothing more.

Heaven's Gate - the original cut the director (Deer Hunter) gave to the studio was over 5 hours long. It's rumored to exist somewhere.

I've seen bits and pieces of the cut-down version...the camera just lingers on subjects for minutes on end as if he said...action and the crew left for lunch.

"Mars Needs Moms"?! WTF is that? Hard to believe a $150 million movie flew completely under my radar.

They knew it was going to suck so they didn't waste money on marketing.

From what most people have said, it's not as bad as the previews suggest and is actually an enjoyable movie. With that said, this movie had fail written all over it from the get-go.

Who gives $250M to a director that has never made a live-action movie to make a special fx heavy film based on a series of book that has a niche following starring the guy from Friday Night Lights? And then releases it in March.

Eh, it's hard for a Disney film to not make its money back through DVD and television showings (same goes for most big studio pictures). They might be counting pennies but I expect them to break even within a few years and make a tidy profit as they show the movie repeatedly on their networks. This is embarrassing but not exactly a financial disaster. The fact that they have to show such a large loss for their studio is hilarious however.

If it takes them years to maybe make the money back it's a financial disaster.

Why?

I've never understood why people "root" for things to bomb. Well except for 3D and anything related to those Meet the Spartans type movies.

I saw it in the theatre. I'm a history buff, and it's based on a fascinating event in US history, so I had high hopes. I kept waiting for it to get better, and it just didn't. Stunningly bad. I've never been so disappointed in a movie.

because it forces studios to make better movies. Or at least, that's the reasoning.

I want movies like Jack and Jill to bomb because I think it's an insult to moviegoers to even make the movie.

I want movies that look like crap, ones where studios sink 250M+ into them just for the sake of doing it, to BOMB.

Making great movies is less about how much money you throw at them, and more about having a great script, great director, and great acting

Yeah. This film was by no means horrible. Plus Andrew Stanton directed it, the guy who has been one of the chief engineers at Pixar and gave us Finding Nemo and Wall-e. Give the man a break.

This isn't like a Roland Emmerich film. I saw it and thought it was just alright. Nothing particularly special, but just alright. Don't see any reason why we should be rooting for this one in particular to bomb.

FWIW I haven't said anything negative about this movie.

I'm speaking about why I personally root for certain movies to bomb
