For all ya'll that know the proper procedure for upgrading harddrives. Don't trade it in to Gamestop, and screw somebody else.

Had the 80010514 death code come up on my GS Refurbed PS3, buying used was one of the bigger mistakes of my life. Tried to talk to Sony about getting a new disk drive put in, couldn't do anything about it. Tried to talk to GS about why they took in a modified PS3, said apparently they never should have. When I bought it the serial number sticker they put on it was barely holding and now its gone, think one of my drunk friends might have finished it off. So GS wouldn't do anything with.

So lessons learned don't buy anything from GS anymore.

Punch line: Got screwed by the previous owner when the PS3 went to shite, and no one would help me either trade-in or get a new disk drive because the original hard drive wasn't in the system.

ehhh......if i had one that GS wasnt supposed to take and they did, i'd say it was their fault and not mine

replacing the disk drive shouldnt cost too much i would think

That's the risk of buying used. Once anything had been modified in the machine, any warranty is void and nobody will touch it. How long ago did you buy it from Gamestop? They usually have a return policy on used items.

Where would i look to buy one and would it be doable with somewhat limited knowledge. The only thing I've done internally with a computer system is add ram sticks other than that, not much.

I said that and they said without the serial number they couldn't do anything with it, same as sony

Hey Croacka thx for the insight on actually replacing it myself...

Dude before me upgraded the thing to 120 gb so putting a new drive in it could make a pretty stout machine.

Looked it up online and its pretty freakin easy.

I don't think I would enter buy a console from GS, new or used. Buying games is enough of a pain.

Good luck. My roommate tried to replace something on his PS3, and I'm not sure if it was the hard drive or something else, but it want fastened down at all. Just sitting there.

I looked it up online and it seems just about unscrewing the drive from the body and disconnecting it from the motherboard by a plug, and just putting the new one in.

was the error you got related to the hard drive?

I don't know how you feel about this, but newer Slims are about $250 for a 160 GB. Used ones (120 GB's) are about $220 I think.

Just a thought. Sorry about your bad experience, mine was bought as a used one and luckily I've had no problems.

Error 80010514
quote:

If you suddenly encountered Ps3 Error 80010514, one cause may be a defective part of the internal hard drive; a small piece of hard drive space that your PS3 is attempting to write on is not operating correctly. And the other cause is a faulty or incorrect installation of a software program or its firmware. The main symptoms of the Ps3 error 80010514 is its inability to read the disk and for the game to execute.

Do you get online with it and do an update?

ETA: Read a few more sites, and that's the general consensus.

A two year old can replace a hard drive on a ps3. I know the slim is easy as unscrewing a screw and putting another drive in. Pretty sure the older models are the same way.

This is PS3 says it was manufactured in 2007. So right when it came out. My issue was I was playing FF13 and during a cutscene it just froze, so I proceeded to reset and try again, then it was a multitude of issues starting, didn't load the game from the beginning, would load the game to the start screen and freeze when loading the save file, and also I would also get the 8001514 when trying to load the game up.

What I'm trying to understand is, is this a hard drive malfunction or a blu ray disc drive issue?

ETA: the first time I got all this shite going, I did a quick format. Went good, played about another 30 minutes and it froze again in-game and proceeded to have all these issues again. The system is fully updated. Heard the latest update was the one that brought the error code about.
