Remember how Joe Dean sent Dinardo a bill for the goalposts in 1997?

I would be widely regarded as being in the group of people would be "last" to defend Joe Dean.

However, he had a quirky sense of humor and this was certainly a manifestation of that.

Don't remember that. Would have been a little unethical, as Shaw replaced them for free.

Yeah I remember reading an article about Shaw replacing them for free, I'm not saying Dean didn't try that tactic but doubtful.

I remember years ago, some campus organization turned down a couple hundred dollar stipend for an athletic function of some sort, on "holier than thou" academic grounds. I can't remember the actual details very well, but it was along the lines of "we don't like the example you're setting, and we would rather stay and study than support the way you run the athletic department". I think Dean was trying to drum up support for some athletic event on-campus; and it was covered in the Reveille at the time. Basketball, maybe during the probation era...??? This was about the time Dean drove into one of the lakes around campus.

My buddy wrote a tongue-in-cheek letter to Dean saying that if such-and-such felt they were too good to support LSU, he certainly would, and if Dean wanted to foot the bill he'd proudly tailgate for our Tigers.

Long story short, my bud got a response, invited to Dean's office, and got a $200 check on the condition that it be spent on a party that weekend. We threw a kegger in Southdowns, and ol' Joe dropped in for a few beers. True story, and while I forget the actual game, I remember Dean's action fondly
