If I have a master and 2 slaves, can I watch 3 different live shows at the same time even though the master only has 2 tuners? Do the slaves have a tuner for live TV? Or do they go through the master for everything?

Any reviews in the BR area?

I've had the system for a while and after some initial problems, it has been working fine.

You should be able to watch 3 live shows at the same time. When I was having problems with my master box, the slaves were still functioning on live TV.

Now, can you watch 3 recorded shows at once? according to the Cox website you can watch up to 5 shows at once, I guess meaning you max out with one master and four slaves. It doesn't specify if they are referring to live or recorded shows though. I'll try to remember to test that out tonight.

Heres another question - how do the boxes communicate with each other? Do they hook into your wifi network or do they somehow communicate over the coax?

You can simultaneously watch live and record only as many shows as you have tuners.

They hook up over the coax. Where all the houses coaxials are split from the main line, they put a special filter on just the lines that go to the boxes.

ETA: I assume the filter allows data in, but then creates a continuous loop for the boxes to communicate with each other and not let data back out. The tech said if I took the filter off, it would distort not just my other tv, but possibly mess with my neighbors cable lines too.

Yep, and it's a standard known as "MoCA".

Depends what your current set up is. We got it installed and our bill decreased $50, but we went from 5 HD DVR boxes to 1 Master with 3 slaves and then an extra HD DVR (Cox said 3 slaves was the max)

So one person says that they can watch 3 live shows and the other says only as many tuners as you have?

Sooo.. do the slaves have a tuner in them for live TV?

No trouble with On Demand, but I know my DVR freezing problem has been fixed. I know a ton of people here were having the same problem. Wondering if anyone is still having issues.

My DVR freeze issue has also been resovled. I had them give me 3 months of DVR service credited... and I have 3 DVR's. So that was a nice credit.

Wayne M? LSU band? I see you are in Zachary, which is why I ask. I am in Zachary also. So that means Zachary is now supporting the Whole Home DVR.

So, is the whole home dvr system any better than having 3 or 4 HD/DVRs? Any unexpected issues with the new service that you miss or wish you would not have lost? I am trying to decide between the new service or just adding another HD/DVR or two.

It may be cheaper to run the whole home system instead of 4 separate dvrs but I am not sure. I guess a bonus would be setting recordings onjust one unit rather than multiples. Also, you can be midway through a show, stop it, and pick up right where you left off in another room without having to skip through the program.

Having one whole home dvr and 3 slaves is a lot cheaper than extra dvrs. I think each dvr adds 20-25 to your bill

The extra recording tuners would be nice but you would have to watch a certain recording in the room it was recorded in.

That's one reason the Cox offering sucks. It doesn't have enough recording tuners, and it doesn't have enough storage. If you're open to buying your own equipment, go here and check out the upcoming Q and Echo:

LINK

The Q is based on Windows Embedded Media Center, and it has 6 tuners and 2 TB of storage. One CableCARD at $2/mo runs it. The Echo units are Media Center Extenders and are what you use at remote locations. All the tuning and recording takes place on the Q. I don't know what these are going to cost; the Q probably $800 or so, and the Echos perhaps $150 each. But if you're already into Media Center on your PC, you can use the Echos with it. You could also use an Xbox 360 as an extender. The nice thing is that the only monthly fee is the CableCARD rental; there is no service or guide fee to pay.

ETA: You can't do On Demand or PPV with Media Center. That's the main downside to it.
