Manny Diaz unofficial coach-in-waiting at UT?

Ok, here is my latest scoop on the coaching situation at UT:
1. They thought Mack was done after this past year. Urban had made three trips to Austin and it was thought he was the next coach.

2. Ohio State had an opening, and that is why Urban is not at UT.

3. Mack still thinks that UT will be team to beat in 2014, so he is waiting until then to retire.

4. I have been told that Mack will most likely go work in broadcasting (ESPN) after retirement (versus taking over for Dodds as AD).

5. They are all really high on Manny Diaz. If his defenses continue to do well, he may be the next head coach after Mack retires.

Thoughts?

He is the best coach in college, and has a history of job hopping, so it is always worth reaching out to him.

That being said, I seriously doubt he coaches at another school due to his age, location of Alabama (ie relatively close to his lake house) and the elite level that he has Bama playing right now.

Bama might find itself in the same shoes as UT pretty soon..trying to figure who the successor is going to be. I wonder if Smart is on the fast track...

Manny Diaz is interesting. Seems UT is really trying to hire a coach, without having to force Mack out (ie Muschamp). Texas is the best job in the country, so I am not sure why they are acting so desperate to find a successor. Also, I don't get Texas' position of not hiring a proven head coach...

Probably trying to make the transition as seamless as possible and have the new guy already well aware of "the Texas way".

Why is Major never mentioned? Too young? Not a good coach?

would be a stupid move, imo... no need to paint yourself in a corner (similar to what happened with muschamp) when you're one of the top 5 programs in football... just let things play out and have a nation-wide search when the time comes

they can do better than an unknown like Diaz.

I think Manny is a great, smart, and imaginative DC. But I would be dissapointed if Texas hired a coordinator from within when Mack retires. Programs like Texas, Bama, LSU, USCw should be able to go get a proven HC.

Would have loved to see UM at Texas and was hoping he'd continue at ESPN for a couple more years then come to Austin. The so-called inside info still points to Peterson from Boise last I read.

Manny and Major need to go prove they can manage a whole team - not just one part - at another school first. I think Mack's gone in a couple years provided that (1) we don't suck so bad next year that he's gone sooner, or (2) the end of the BCS contract brings about another realignment chaos and Dodds wants him to stay on at least the first year UT is in a new or much realigned conference for stability. Obviously he wants to go out on a high note - who doesn't.
And no, I don't think Saban's soming to Texas.

Or at least certainly not as good as Diaz or even Harsin.

Our AD $Bill Byrnes couldn't bring himself to offer less than half what Saban is making now. So, if any offering was done it was from a donor.

The CiW scheme died with Muschamp and Holgerson episodes.

Doubt seriously that t.u. will hire from within unless its after a MNC.

I still think Chris Peterson would get strong consideration, depending on what he does the next 1-2 years.
