^^Am I asking too much out of one spot?

My lovely girlfriend and I will be in the New Orleans area with a car available for area travel during Jazzfest and would like to spend a day at a nature preserve or the like for birding and wildlife.
I asked this on the O-T Lounge a month ago and one good suggestion seemed to be Lafitte National Park, Barataria Preserve.
I didn't come up with much else doing a TigerDropping search, so sorry if this has been covered repeatedly.
I'm a photographer, so I'll have a Canon 7D and 100-400 lens with me as the longest glass (unless I empty my savings account and tax refund on a used 500mm f4) and a 10-22 for landscapes, if this matters.
Thanks for any help you can give!

I don't know how far it is, but bogue chitto state park has an awesome 5 mile hiking trail. We saw tons of wildlife. Hills, lakes, rivers, etc. Beautiful.

I'd try Grand Isle. The birds are migrating across the Gulf and tend to come down on the first land available. Grand Isle can be pretty good during migration. If Dauphin Island is on your way to New Orleans you could try that too, it's probably a bit better. Lafitte National Park, Barataria Preserve may be decent too since there aren't many trees between there and the coast and if you don't want to drive as far as Grand Isle it is probably a good pick.

I'm blocking out the end of April to go down to the Keys for birding/photograpy. Plan on camping a night on the Dry Tortugas which are almost legendary for migration birding. Can't wait.

BTW - I bought the same lens you are using less than a year ago and love it.

Tigris,
Thanks.
I am looking forward to the trip.

I was in the Keys 20 years ago and camped out in the wilderness. It was great. Best of luck with your adventure there!
