If you want the 5 best OL out there, does Williford make the cut?

Don't want to bang on Will too hard, he has filled
in nicely I guess. He seems to end up on ground
often after contact, rarely see him on second
level. IMHO, the 5 should be:
LT Faulk
LG Collins
C PJ
RG Hurst
RT E Washington
I have no reason to put Wash at RT other than I
liked him as a prospect. But the best OL need to
be out there. Hurst had some trouble protecting
the edge, move his big butt inside & let him
maul some folks. Evan has some ability, let's see
it on the field.

You're making a pretty big assumption that Washington is better than Hurst, a 2nd team All-SEC Tackle according to the SEC coaches.

Since every other position on the team seem settled with last year's contributors, the competition for the open guard spot will be a hot topic going into the spring.

Yea, I realize it's crazy talk, but I like talking football. But couldn't Hurst be all SEC at guard also? Could Hurst be a better guard than Will? Whatever the coaches do, at least open it up for competition. Complacency is a bitch!

I feel like putting Collins at Guard is an odd move. Does he then go play RT then eventually LT? is he gonna change his position 3 times in the next three years?

Is Collins even a prototype LT? I know he has the feet, but he seems a lil short-armed. Am I crazy or just nitpicking?

There's a lot more than playing OLine than just showing up with a good weight. If it's a push, I'll take the experience in the trenches any day.

LT: Faulk
LG: Collins
C: Lonergan
RG: Josh D/Josh Williford (Spring battle)
RT: Alex Hurst

You don't move your bookend tackles if you don't have to, and La'el Collins is too good to keep off the field.

I believe he does. only remember 1 penalty against him. and I disagree with not seeing him in the 2nd level.

The more pertinent question is, why don't you?

Williford is a beast and often was the best OG on the field last season.

This. He delivered some monstrous pancakes in the games I attended. Definitely deserves to be in the mix with the other guard candidates.

"Beast" is thrown around way too much on these boards. Is he really that? Because if he is, he should've been throwing folks around as big as he is, & I didn't see it. Of course I wasn't really grading the OL. I bet 10% of the guys that are labeled beasts on here are actual beasts.

Williford is definitely the 1st guard right now, but in the Spring, I'd cross-train La'El & Hurst at both Guard & Tackle, & let the best man win. Whomever loses that battle gets the nod inside.

My prediction?

Faulk, Hurst, Lonergan Williford Collins

Or

Faulk, Collins, Lonergan, Williford, Hurst

Ok, I'm sensible & if yall think Wiiliford is good where he is, then cool. But I do agree w/ Gfunk, you have to open it up for competition.

I think it's:

LT: Faulk
LG: Collins
C: Lonergan
RG: Williford
RT: Hurst

Miles, or whoever, seems to favor a more athletic LG than most, recently. Williford and Hurst played those spots well enough for 12.5 games, and coaches don't typically shuffle linemen around "just because". Well, decent coaches anyway

So plugging Collins in for Blackwell makes for the easiest transition and makes the most sense from a chemistry standpoint.

Yep. The guy can flat out play.

But I think he'll rotate with La'el too.

You want to start a kid who was hyped in high school over a kid that has been in the system for 4 years. Who is bigger and stronger than Collins. Don't you think that if Collins would have been better you would have seen him on the field more? Collins will deserve to play when he beats out one of the guys in front of him. JJ is the only one who was handed a starting job even though his competition out played him his entire career. We don't need that on the offensive line.
