Good article comparing this year's class to that of last year's class (who most thought was outstanding).

Jeez. I avoided the "did they lie about...." thread, so I didn't realize Davis was THAT intentional about misleading LSU. If you don't want to go, don't go, but come on.

Good stuff

Ultimately the reason why we missed out on player's that we "thought" we were getting, or having player's commit and leave....was pretty simple. We are loaded at every position, and that means a lot of competition for playing time. Looks like the ones that left wanted to play right away, and shy away from competition. Good riddance, I want players that want to bleed purple and gold, and not shy away from competition. We will be fine, and I feel that we are going to look back on this class and say "Wow...I can't believe he was a 3* recruit???"

I have no problem with kids leaving the state. Some kids just want to get away and there is nothing you can do or say to convince them to stay. While I went to LSU for undergrad, I left the state to get my graduate degree. I just wanted to get away and experience something else for a few years. I'm sure the staff did all they could to get Kiel, Collins, and Davis to come to LSU -- outside of giving their girlfriends jobs. That being said, what Davis and his coach did is deceitful and says a lot about both of them. People always bash coaches for over-signing, but what they don't realize is that coaches have to over-sign to cover their asses from punk 18 year old kids who are intent on "playing the game."

I think we have a very underrated class that directly addresses our needs. We have been bitching for years about our lack of depth in the OL and LB positions. No longer.

Something that caught my attention is 16 four stars this year, but only 11 last year. This proves that sites outside of scout put too much value in the top 5 star players. I think I read on here that Lsu has signed 20 five stars since CLM became coach and only 5 made all sec. This is a good class.

Excellent link and read. I've been arguing the class is not highly ranked nationally because LBers, TEs and SNPs (which are the primary strengths of this class) aren't gaudy like Top 5 QBs, RBs, WRs, OTs and CBs are - the article you linked seems to illustrate that there is little difference in quality between 2011 and 2012. Jeremy Hill notwithstanding (and he is not consistently counted in this class), we accomplished the ranking we have without an anchor (like Gunner Kiel, Landon Collins, Mario Edwards or Tracy Howard would have been - just getting 1 of those players we missed on would have made this class #7 or so, even losing Davis).

Things like what Davis did are pathetic. It was pathetic yesterday and it was pathetic when Perriloux did it also.

So Bama and Texas aren't "loaded" at all positions? Both recruit top 3 classes every year.

There is no question we do more with the players we get. Bama has hacked the system, so you can discount them as an outlier, somewhat - but clearly Texas has, in a similar vein to USC, recruited lots of very highly rated players, but rarely produces a "football team" even approaching their level of talent.

Well said. Some folks just don't want to go to LSU. Fine- Davis will be a distant memory in Kwon's shadow. Cory T. will make us forget about collins & his girlfriend. Life goes on and LSU still wins. This group will change one thing in 3 years- the idea of why we can't get outrageous LB play... problem solved.

The difference is that the five stars we signed last year were immidiate contributors:

Hilliard
Landry
Freak

Collins to a lessor degree

But we don't need them to be immediate contributors. We are an extremely young, and deep, team.

That being said, Hill was widely considered the better back between he and Hilliard last year. One would assume he would be ready to contribute come fall. And while Freak and Landry did contribute, and I think they are both great players, they weren't superstars this year. How do you know that no one in this class will be able to have a similar impact to that of Freak and Landry their freshman years? Because they weren't 5*s in high school? I guess you have much more faith in the rankings than I do.

Good article. I think LSU signed a pretty good group of kids. I would rather trust the decision of a coaching staff that sees the kids at camp and at games than some guy trying to sell magazines or internet subscriptions.

my point exactly. We only need about 10 horses in each class to EVER contribute. Ergo, I look at how many 4+ stars we get as a rough indicator of the likelihood that we can get 10 horses, realizing that 3 stars and below will sometimes be among those 10 horses. By that standard, which is close to what is being said in this article, we be good!
