Coming out of high school Spears was a top (of not THE top) TE in the country. Similar size and agility as Liggins. If Liggins doesn't pan out at QB, could be a nice TE prospect.

Spears was our starting DE and a DE in the NFL... Wouldn't he make a better DE prospect?

This is off of an article in 2000.

He was considered a FREAK TE prospect because of his size and incredible athletic ability (also a great bball player). Had he played for someone like Sean Payton instead of Saban, he would've ended up like Jimmy Graham/Gronk/Gates.

Not saying he'd be that good, but he'd be that kind of TE.

The dude ended up a 1st Round Draft Pick. Not sure what more you want. It initially ended up working for him, despite his NFL career being average.

I remember that, but he ended up a being an NFL DE. Who knows what he would have done at TE in college. Not saying he would have been good or bad. We just don't know.

I'm not saying it didn't work out. No logical person could. I was merely commenting on his raw athletic ability and his potential at the TE position. Saban prefers to have his best athletes on defense. The game has changed a lot in the NFL regarding the TE position and that is soon to affect the college ranks as well. I think with a different coach and had he come out now, Marcus would've for sure stayed at TE. He could really go up and get a rebound and has great hands and agility.

I think he has the same build as Gates.

Wow. Hard to believe that Mark Anderson was that highly thought of by some folks. Rated higher than Kellen Winslow? Regardless, he had a great career at Alabama as a DE.
