Offshore operator's salaries

Does anyone know the approximate starting pay and top pay for offshore operators working for major a oil company in the Gulf...mainly Shell? What career advancement opportunities could I expect and how long do people typically work offshore before moving to something onshore?

Do you have any operator experience? If not you're looking at working for a contract company first and start off around 45k. There are many different advancement opportunities out there but not many involve onshore work unless you are willing to take a big pay cut.

I have a bachelors in MIS, and I'm in a PTEC program right now.....graduating this July

Does not guarantee a job with Shell, You will be graded by your offshore performance by your peers offshore. Have seen alot not offered

I definitely realize I'm not guaranteed anything after the internship. Do you know what percentage do get full-time offers if they perform well during their internship?

I think a good number are offered jobs if they do well in their internships. I have worked on many Shell platforms so I've had a chance to talk to some of the interns. They usually intern for 6 months, then when hired on they spend i think a year at Ram Powell, which is considered like the training facility, then from their they are sent to another platform on a more permanent basis. Shell operators are paid in the $40 an hr range, and they work 14 and 14

$40 an hour is hilarous......I started at 12 in 97. You dont look at hourly pay you look at annual

Depending on degree, if no experience and with out a degree that pertains ie engineering field, it will be hard to get on with a major. If you do most make between the 80K to 100K range. I know some people who signed on with Chev last year for 94.

The OP was dealing with a operator starting pay. Inexperienced like he is with shell he will be put in NOPS program IF he is hired after his internship. Most start at associate pay level grade and have to work there way up which if you work the books and program right should take about 10-12 yrs to get to 100k

@Greenhead22 You said that operators working for a major start around 80-100k. How often do they get raises? What is their salary 5 yrs later for example? Do you know about salaries for Electronics Technicians. If you had the choice between signing on as an Electronics Technician or an Operator, what would you choose and why?

To be honest I am not sure of the raise scale for the majors. The guys I were speaking of were A operators with 10-20 years experience, non had college degrees. I will say the bonuses are very nice. They can total up to 20k for the operators and 50k for foremans. The best thing about the majors are the stock options. I know more than a few guys who barley grad HS who now have 1-2M in stock, granted they have been with the company for 30+ years. As far as the choice between a operator or electrician I guess it depends. Operator is prob more cushy but if you get tired of the offshore life its limited for main land outside of the refineries. As far as a ETs salary I do not know. Hope that helps a little, good luck.

Everyone is lumped together at shell that is hourly into different pay grades. A operator and a ET could be making same money. It just depends on how fast you move up in your bookwork and merit. If i was going to choose a path it would be ET/CAO. Good clean job, Operators do get dirty and have to do manual labor every day even thou ppl have different misconceptions about it

Has to be seasoned engineer; no hourly with shell will start at that pay

Thanks Greenhead22 and LSU Fan Tylertown. I am leaning towards the Electronics Technician path. Operators do get dirty, and their job can be very physical at times. Electronics Technicians have it easier, in many industries.

Any company you would recommend for someone who wants to work as an Electronics Technician? I have a BS in Electronics Engineering Technology. I would like to work for a company that has a well structured training program.
