4 main groups - Chouest, Benson, NBA connected guy, Others we don't know about

quote:

3. A National Group with Basketball Connections

At least one person in the mix is very familiar among NBA circles, and his name isn’t spelled “Mashburn.” This person, confirmed to be leading a well capitalized group, has NBA experience and connections like nobody else whose name has even come up as a potential owner.

The main organizer of this group was a player, head coach, GM, and has served in several other NBA roles throughout his 30 plus year basketball career.

I wonder who the NBA connected guy is. Isiah Thomas?!

Read the article. It's not Mashburn. It's someone who was a player, head coach, and GM.

After reading that I really have no idea what group I would prefer. All of them have their positives and negatives.

The experience of the group organized by the former player, coach, and GM seems intriguing but it would make me a bit nervous for the long term future beyond the new signed lease. Though I guess one way to look at it is that if it isn't working by then they don't need to be here anyway. I believe the rumors of the length of the new lease is till 2025?????

The great news in all of this is that it looks like my kids will be able to grow up attending NBA basketball games, where I had to go to Houston to see games. Thats the bottom line for me at this point.

I'd be nervous about a lot more than that. Unless it's an old timer we're not thinking of, the OP is right and Isaiah is the only one that fits. With his track record we may want him to move the team after he wrecks it.

Frankly, each has its benefits.

Chouest with his diehard interest in basketball, familiarity with the team and local contacts. But how frugal of an owner would he be? Who would he bring in? I'm thinking he would pretty much keep the current people in place for now.

Benson? His people have experience in running a pro franchise, and he's got access to sponsorships. But I wonder about the Hornets always playing "second fiddle" to the Saints.

As far as the NBA group is concerned, I was skeptical at first. But if the lead guy does have local ties and family and is relocating to New Orleans, maybe there's no problem. That group would certainly have NBA experience, and maybe that would be a good thing.

But I agree it's all pretty good news. The team will be here for the foreseeable future and have a realistic chance to build a fan base.

Well, the article does state that the NBA player is "not the primary moneyman." But still, I'd prefer not to deal with the Isaiah stink.

I'm thinking another Piston instead of Zeke.

Joe Dumars is from Shreveport, played at McNeese, is on the outs in Detroit thanks to new ownership and some questionable talent decisions over the years, but would have connections out the ying-yang.

That'd be much better than Isaiah, and maybe he can teach Gordon how to play through injuries. And he may not be from NO, but he's from LA and went to Grambling. LINK

Agreed, if it is Isaiah there is nothing intriguing about it.

I'd love to see Dumars as the guy above Demps, but he was never a head coach. So far Willis Reed meets the mystery criteria best.

He somewhat fits the local contacts description.

From the hints, Elgin Baylor is probably the ex player. He coached in new orleans and was vice president and gm of the clippers.

Not a big fan, but if he replaced monty he could win me over..

I'd prefer Reed, but he's still a better choice than Zeke.

Baylor can at least blame some of the problems he had as GM on the owner, Don Sterling, who is a tightwad and racist a-hole.

Zeke, with complete control, leaves financial problems in his wake.

The first person I thought of was Jerry West.

My first thought was Magic, but then I read the rest and saw La connections and moving his family, which Magic certainly wouldn't be doing.

Can't be Karl Malone because he's never been a GM or coach.

Willis Reed and Elgin Baylor make a lot of sense.
