I'm enjoying so far. Not as good as Deadwood but has potential. Like the authentic look of it.

I like it. A few here don't like it because the show has the black guy with more "freedoms" then he really would have had.

interesting...looks to me like he's treated like shite most of the time. Only the main guy and the ho are giving him any respect. Curious to see where they are going with the Indian guy.

It's not as good as other AMC shows like Breaking Bad and Walking Dead, but I like it enough.

I like it so far, and think it has potential to get better. I thoutht the first few episodes of Justified were OK, and grew into the best show on TV.

I like it so far. Breaking Bad took a few shows to get going imo. Now that they've left the "town" I think more can happen. I felt like the story line was hindered by it being mainly in that makeshift place.

i like this show. Characters are interesting and its got a good storyline. as for criticism of the historical accuracy, spare me. I have yet to see any series that is flawless.

I'm sure the show will continue to have a lot happen around that town as the town and show share the same name.

Its more a case of weak arse writing when you get to those parts. The fight bothered me in particular. Not that I couldn't see an organized white/black fight in that day... but that they had to play the over the top "You be a free man and can fight back now" thing. And THEN, it had to be a complete draw, with both men exhausted and beating the crap out of each other in a total movie cliche.... until the cheating Irishman changes the outcome. :bleh:

Heaven forbid the white man should be a better fighter than the black ex-slave, maybe due to him a combat hardened ex-soldier, or for that matter the strong black man could have been the better fighter because of his own physically hard life, besting the drunken veteran. Either way it would have been more interesting.

The show's producers seem to have to gone to a lot of trouble to try and recreate period accuracy. But when it comes to racial issues... they are taking the easy way out, far too often.

Its entirely possible to have a black protagonist that has learned to navigate the tricky racial waters of 1870ish America, with finesse and intelligence. You don't have to resort to casting Common in the role, and turning the character into a stereotypical ghetto black man, complete with rage.

I tried. I just can't do it. It just seems like the show moves from one groan worthy/eye rolling moment to another without enough compelling characters and/or quality dialogue for me to overlook its just plain awful plotting.

Spoilers:

It portrayal and treatment of race is comically bad. The protagonist is plantation owner from Mississippi and freed his slaves a year before the war (I mean Mississippi, the state that at the time whose economy was booming at the time and entirely based around the prototypical southern plantation system...give me a fricking break...it just isn't going to happen in Mississippi)...come on. First, it is 2011 and Tony Soprano, Al Swearengen, and Walter White have all been the main characters of successful TV programs. Your main character can be morally compromised and people will still watch your show. Second, if you really want to make him a white hat let him have his racial epiphany or whatever within the course of the show. That could be an interesting story and development for your main character. Hell, it might actually make your main character an actual character rather than some douche seeking REVENGE!!!!!

It explained his 'racial epiphany' in the last episode.

I guess you didn't watch it.

I have less of a problem with the Bohannon character. And I don't think he was a plantation owner. Just a slave owner. This could be similar to the widow Douglas in Huck Finn that only owned Jim.

Revenge is an adequate motive for him. Its a bit of a Josey Wales ripoff, but I can tolerate it.
I believe he *is* a morally compromised character. That's the revenge part. And I don't think they really revealed what his motives truly were for freeing whatever slaves he owned. They might not be the result of some moral awakening.

Bohannon and Lily are the most interesting characters on the show. The Swede is decent I guess.

Do you mean like the black sheriff character in Blazing Saddles? A little humor there, but I imagine the portrayal in HOW is closer to accurate of the feelings of the time. Survival during that period for blacks must have been dependent on being strong and I would imagine there was a lot of pent up rage and mistrust. I don't have a problem with the storyline and feel the characters will evolve and hopefully won't be so one dimensional as layers are revealed.
