I posted this in another thread but thought it might answer some questions re: his choice to be at ASU.

Gus made it very clear in his press conference yesterday that he is exactly (beyond any doubt) where he wants to be. He is the one who contacted the AD this past Thursday after the job became available. He is good friends with a lot of high school coaches in the area (present and former) and made it clear that he is proud to be a former high school coach. Hugh Freeze and Steve Roberts are close friends as well, so he knew exactly what he wanted and the situation at hand. He was just waiting for the right time for the situation to present itself and the right time is now, and the right situation is at ASU.

He stated that coming home was what he really preferred to do, beyond being any place else, and it's where he plans to be for a very long time. He stressed this.

I could tell that he was really thankful for his time at AU and made it very clear regarding his love and respect for AU. He just wanted to return home and be instrumental in taking ASU to another level. The AD also made reference to what has been done at schools like Boise State and that he, GM, and the university are ready and committed to enabling and making this happen.

He stated that he felt like he and his family will get the love and support they need in the Jonesboro community and doesn't prefer to be anywhere else. Beyond any doubt, he made these points very clear.

Regarding his choice in taking a cut in salary, etc., he stated something to the effect 'I'm not what one would call a typical or "normal coach" and I don't tend to make typical or "normal coach" choices.' (paraphrasing)

It makes sense. That's one reason he's been very successful.

No ill feelings whatsoever towards Coach Malzahn. Will pull for him to succeed wherever he coaches at. Thankful for the 3 years we got out of him.

Freeze left him a loaded team in terms of Sunbelt that he can possibly take to a BCS bowl in his first season. Then the 4 million dollar jobs open.

Either that, or he wants Petrino's job. I figure it's the latter.

Seriously, though...thanks for the synopsis.

Just calling it like I saw it. The man is all class.

I don't have that much class.

Gus made it clear that it's not about the money. It's about what's in his heart and I got the impression that he wants the challenge, i.e. taking the program to a new level and sustaining it.

I really don't think so. That's wasn't my impression.

dude if you don't realize that the first speech that ANY coach gives at a new job is nothing but coach speak, then I don't even know where to start.

Typically, I might agree but I agree with Gus in this case. He's not the typical "normal" coach with typical motives and aspirations and I have never regarded him to be a bullshitter. I'm not an ASU fan. Just calling it the way I see it.

at first read i thought you were an auburn fan defending this move. your post is very believable; not everyone makes the moves that are calculated to make more money. my hat's off to malzahn for doing what he wants to do. life is short.

I don't think he had a choice to stay at Auburn. It is also clear that his wife could not handle being in the spotlight at a high profile school. He just better be ready for ULM.

He was overpaid. It was clear his offense was not going to work without Cam. I think Auburn will go back to tradition. I believe between Pat and Chizik that Gus was told if he can find a job it would be in his best interest to take it.Plus his wife made him and the program look amateur.

My hat's off to him as well. Life...indeed it is short, and I think Gus sees the much larger picture.

So he didn't talk about his wife sleeping with auburn football players?
