To be clear, Dallas has NO cap space. Mavs are trying to those contracts --- Fernandez and Brewer --- off the roster.

I'm iffy on Fernandez because of his visa problems and attitude problems, but Brewer may be a good pickup for a trade exception. He's only got about $3m / season for 2 seasons on his contract and would be useful as a defensive stopper.

Brewer would be a dandy backup SG to Gordon.

a) I don't want to help Dallas get Dwight

b) I seriously doubt our "owners" are going to let us take on almost any salary outside of the CP trade. They will throw hissy fits every time we try. At least in this case, Cuban wouldn't.

Just to set the record straight, you think the NBA is going to allow the hornets to put together a full roster?

Last I heard, we hadn't hit the salary floor yet and our roster is like CP3, 5 other guys, and D-Leaguers. That means we'd have to spend SOMETHING to get there.

Granted, someone will piss and moan because they wanted Brewer, but it's hard to go "#basketballreasons" on picking up a solid player with a cheap contract.

c) Cuban is constantly trying to screw us so it'd have to be much better players for us to be interested. Even with DWest vs. Dirk gone I think Dallas has become an even more hated rival than before.

Salary Floor $49 million

Salary before trade $42 million

Salary after trade $46 million.

Just sign Beli and you're above the floor and on top of that you're probably going to sign Landry, someone like Smith and then the dleaguers.

They just got Lamar Odom for nothing. They can deal with it.

Hollinger's got a theory as to what's going on here.

Apparently, Vince Carter was offered the MLE before the Odom deal, but the team no longer has that as an option now that he's on the roster.

Now they want to clear cap space in order to sign VC to that deal.
