Question about G.I. Jane and military ranks

In the movie, Viggo Mortensen's character is a master chief, and Demi Moore is a lieutenant.
Since lieutenants are officers and master chiefs are enlisted, wouldn't a lieutenant outrank a master chief? How did Urgayle get away with treating O'Neill like shite?

Because SEAL instructors can treat all recruits like shite. Regardless of rank.

That makes sense. Does that go for all special forces training?

The ranks that matter in this situation are Instructor and Candidate.

Viggo was a Cadre and they can do anything they want. Kinda like a Lieutenant going to Airborne school and getting mauled by a bunch of NCOs.

I'd imagine so. Everyone should go through the same training and get the same treatment.

I don't know much about the movie, never seen it, but I know in an officer and gentleman, Lou Gossit beat the shite out of Mayonnaise and then had to salute him once he was a grad.

Can't speak for Special Forces but it does for the Ranger and Airborne schools.
