I don't remember when it was but in the early 2000s we lost the toss the other team differed and we chose to kick and had to kick again after the half. Can the rant refresh my memory?

TIA.

Mississippi State 2002

Bradie James chose to kick instead of receive when MSU defered to the 2nd half.

It was a game in 2002 because it was Bradie James who was the captain. I remember him commenting about it after the game. Don't remember the exact game...but the situation was actually...

We won the toss

Instead of electing to "Defer" the decision until the 2nd half, they decided to "Kick"

The other team which had 1st choice for the 2nd half, decided to receive for the 2nd half.

So the lesson was, if you win the toss, you either decide to "Receive" or you "Defer the decision until the 2nd half" as opposed to saying "Kick"

I thought it was against A&M earlier than 2002.

Good memory. "Mississippi State won the toss and deferred to LSU. However Tigers team captain Bradie James elected to kickoff rather than receive, costing the Tigers a possession to start the half. The last time the Tigers were a victim of this miscue was in the Curly Hallman era, and, ironically, Hallman was on the sidelines as the defensive backs coach on Saturday." - lsusports.net recap of the game LINK

We last played at A&M in 1995.

I distinctly remember Bradie James being involved and it was a home game.

It was A&M during the Hallman era. He was so stupid he thought if you won the toss and chose to kick off then you automatically get the ball in the second half. He was shocked when A&M chose to receive in the second half.

I was at school in the Hallman era. I remember joking that we won the toss and Curley told the captain to defer to the Kentucky game.

LSU has kicked off twice in every game they have ever played except for the games where they were shutout. In those few instances, LSU only kicked off once.
