I'm looking to make my way up to Felsenthal pretty soon, any tips or advice? Spots I should check out, boat launches I should use, keys to killing ducks?

I'm a seasoned duck hunter with loads of experience guiding in both fields and timber, but I've never even stepped foot on Felsenthal.

This is funny, have had a trip plan for either Felsenthal or White River. My buddy, the one supplying the boat had to back out. Dont guess you have a boat and are looking for some hunting buddies? From all the research I have done, Felsenthal will be better bc of the drought we are in. Still waiting to see what the weather does though, were planning on going between last two weeks of Dec and first two weeks of Jan.

I haven't hunted it regularly, but have hunted it about 10-15 times over the years. I have friends that hunt it a lot.

It is best when the river is out period. There are greentrees there but they are best when there is more water. When conditions are right it's a great place to hunt, most of the time when I have hunted it was late in the season and we murdered the mallards.

I've actually got two boats... One is a 17' Excel with a Mud Buddy, the other is a 16' Jon with a 45hp on the back.

When you boys looking to go? My hunting schedule is kind of crazy, I'll be scattered between 4 states this year.

Would think it would be a lot harder to hunt with less water. Always seem to have had more success when I was in the flooded woods - which I would think there is none now. Never done as well as in water that is there year round. Some people do, but I never knew where they hunted. My understanding (haven't lived in Ark in 5 years) is the new refuge manager isn't going to hold back water every year just to help duck hunting (not that he could really do it right now anyway).

Also, a ton of people hunt Felsenthal. If there are ducks around and with low water, it could get really crowded. Be careful, the locals are protective of their spots.

Well we are playing it by ear, really depends on the weather and how the reports are looking. From what I have gathered its best between the last 2 weeks of Dec and first two weeks of Jan. And for the other guy being worried about the water level. The low water is why we are prob going to Felsenthal. I talked to the head guy up there and he said that they have water year around, they had the best results last year in the past 10 years he said bc they were the few with water.

I plan on calling the head guys back for Felsenthal and White River after Thanksgiving and see how the reports are going and what the water levels are like .

There is nothing in the world quite like standing in the flooded timber of the Felsenthal Swamp just before daylight when the woodies start up. The hair on your back stands and when you start getting your own morning woodie through the waders you just know that the big ducks are coming. The sight of the mallards beating limbs off of the trees to get into the hole you are in is second to none.

I've hunted there for yrs. Had some great hunts there too. If you can find the hardest possible spot to get to, you can limit quick. Last yr was good with lack of water and it's holding around 65 or so now so I expect the same. Here's a few pics

Don't forget to get a pamphlet and sign it and keep it on you. Also supposed to be a 25 shell limit as well and the possum cops check the boat launches. Especially on opening wkened

25 shell limit? I've never heard of that. Not doubting you at all, just never heard of that law.

Its just on Felsthenthal. Its in the pamphlet, I believe. They put it in about 4 or 5 years ago. Prolly a few thousand shells in the bottom of the water where the fish police usually hang out and check folk

The 25 shell limit is at Federal Reserves, not State owned WMA's. Tensas, Felsenthal, Overflow, Upper Ouachita, etc are 25 shell limit places. Bayou Meto close to Stuttgart is a 15 shell limit one.

Since they are limiting you to only 25, can they at least be lead?
