I know someone who does it out of the Houston area (he just started), someone whe used to do it here (biggest con I heard of was the things he hit), and a mechanic for union pacific here (he makes bank). That's all I've got.

How do you get into this? what did you do before? How much time away from them vs. quality of life the pay raise will afford them?

actually my step dad just so happens to be a union pacific conductor.

pros... he makes good money. i don't know exactly but somewhere between 75k-100k a year.

he also gets stretches of days off which is pretty cool
[

the only real con is that they will call him at all times/hours of the day night and he has like 2 hours to report to work and drive. we were at magic springs one day, got a call, had to leave at that mintue.

he also ran over a kid one day.

so how do I get to be a train conductor? I was seriously curious because you are the second person I have heard of recently who is starting this career late in life and I was wondering what it required to get into this field.

I don't know what it requires...I'm only 29, wouldn't really call that late in life...go to WWW.unionpacific.com and click on careers at the bottom and do a search in the area or field you are interested in...
