Never owned a bow before, but looking to venture off and buy a crossbow. Seems as though they have a huge price range. Looking for some suggestions on a lower end model... somewhere around the $300-$400 range.

Stay away from the very cheap ones. They are ticking string bombs.

Just traded mine for a Bar Safari 7 Mag with a Zeiss scope...
