Legal Moonshine - Troy & Sons, Asheville, NC

There was a feature last night on our PBS station leading into the Ken Burns series on Prohibition about legal moonshine being brewed in Asheville. Went by our local ABC store awhile ago and bought a bottle. Not too bad - sipped a little after lunch - much smoother than I anticipated.

I think you'll get a lot of opinions, including my own, that this isn't "moonshine."
Once you go through the processess of making distilled liquor legal, it loses its moniker as "mooshnine" IMO.
And if it's smooth, then it surely isn't moonshine, unless it's been very watered down.

I def agree, having it legal loses the meaning and all that is romanticised about moonshine.

I agree. If it's sold legally, it's not moonshine. All marketing.

Yep.
And, IN MY OPINION, if it's smooth, it aint moonshine either. Liquor with high alcohol contents is not smooth. At all.
The difference between Wild Turkey 80 and Wild Turkey 101 is night and day.
Additionally, what makes liquor smooth is filtering it properly and often multiple times. Removing impuritites is what helps liquor become smooth.
I don't know any real moonshiners who produce 80 proof, multi-filtered shine.
Just my opinion.

This is the stuff my grandfather used to get. We found a couple cases of it recently at his house. 4 out of 5 jars had been oxidized. The ones that weren't tainted were very smooth. This isn't the typical white lightning or whatever, it's prob around 90-120 proof and the color is a little lighter than bourbon. Prob had some charred oak thrown in there for taste and color.

Don't tell me you don't have a non-legal supplier up there, huh?

I've got a couple of mason jars of the real stuff - just had to try out something new.

No shite, didn't even see that:
Maybe it's not like anther slightly illegal product where you can just go work at a restaurant or befriend some kitchen workers and you're in.

Yeah, Blueridge is our resident 'poster I want to be' in about 20 years -- or less if at all possible.
