National TV exposure pays off for LSU on the recruiting trail

LSU football doesn't need bonus media coverage.

But it's getting it and do not underestimate what it means for the Tigers on the recruiting trail.

From the Cowboys Classic, when LSU beat Oregon in the season opener, to Saturday night's prime time 47-21 win over West Virginia with an appearance from College GameDay in Morgantown, it's all but been a Les Miles and LSU reality TV series.

"We've been on national television three of the first four games," Miles said shortly after the Tigers beat the Mountaineers. "We were certainly the biggest game [the week of the] Oregon-LSU matchup. And then out-of-conference, GameDay being here, arguably we played three of the most noteworthy games ... to this point of any school in the country, and won obviously.

"I think it makes a big difference. Our team, our logo is being flashed across millions of television sets across the country."

For LSU recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson the coverage is a recruiting sales tool with no equal. It lets prospects all over the country get to know what LSU football is all about, even if they've never stepped foot in the Bayou and couldn't tell the difference between etoufee and gumbo.

"It helps us tremendously," Wilson said. "It puts us in the national spotlight against quality opponents. You play an Oregon team, you play a Mississippi State team, you get back on the road and you play a fine team like West Virginia in a hostile environment and you do so with a team effort, it validates our sales points when we're trying to recruit kids."

One of the sales points is playing time, even on a deep, talented team.

"We're telling them why they should come to LSU," Wilson said. "You're somebody when you're here. You'll be involved and we'll find a role for you. We play so many kids, freshmen through seniors with no discrimination. It's big for us."

It's hard to find a program any hotter than LSU. The Tigers are 4-0 and secured the No. 1 spot in the AP poll. They have the No. 13 class in the county with 19 commitments, a ranking will likely rise as national signing day draws closer when the Tigers, still in the mix for many of the nation's top prospects, are expected to sign about 24 prospects.

While LSU can cherry pick prospects from across the country thanks to the constant exposure, the Tigers' base, however, will always be in Louisiana. LSU is well-positioned there. The hiring of Wilson after the 2009 season looks like one of the best recruiting hires in recent memory. The former high school coach from New Orleans was having success at Tennessee before Miles nabbed him to head up the recruiting effort at LSU. This year, Wilson has been heavily involved in at least 10 of LSU's 19 pledges.

"There's always been a comfort," Wilson said of LSU and the state of Louisiana. "It's the place where I lay my head. It's home. The university has an awful lot to sell, the program, the facilities, but I know what LSU is. The potential has always been there.

"It's always been the school I've desired to be at."

LSU's 2011 class finished eighth in the nation in Wilson's first season. Seven signees were ranked in the ESPN150. Yet Miles doesn't dwell on high rankings or wide-ranging recruiting relationships when he discusses Wilson; he describes the man.

"He's a guy that has great ties to the state but more than that, he represents the school so well," Miles said. "He's truly a quality man. He has great character. Frankly, our players enjoy him. They enjoy being around him. He has an infectious personality. He's well liked.

"There's a reason why a guy does a great job in recruiting. He's got a great personality and the ability to represent himself in a comfortable, honest, straight-forward fashion. He's just a fine man."

That comes across when Wilson is asked what message he hopes all this media exposure tells prospects. Unlike the high-definition cameras and the satellites it takes to convey it, it's simple.

"To get a great degree and play for championships is our motto," Wilson said.

That motto has been broadcast loud and clear all month.

LSU takes over as No. 1 in AP poll

Another decisive victory away from home pushed LSU to No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll for the first time since 2007.

The Tigers bumped Oklahoma from the top spot Sunday after winning 47-21 at West Virginia the night before.

The Sooners had been No. 1 since the preseason. They stayed unbeaten with a 38-28 victory at home against Missouri.

LSU received 42 first-place votes from the 60-member media panel and 1,471 points. Oklahoma received 12 first-place votes and 1,422 points.

Last week, Oklahoma had 37 first-place votes and LSU had 14.

No. 3 Alabama received five first-place votes and No. 4 Boise State had one.

Oklahoma State jumped two spots to No. 5 after winning at Texas A&M.

In the USA Today coaches' poll, Oklahoma is still No. 1, with LSU and Alabama tied for second.

The Tigers haven't been No. 1 since winning the national championship in 2007. The Tigers held the top ranking for four weeks during the regular season that year.

LSU (4-0) added the victory against West Virginia to wins over Oregon at Dallas Cowboys Stadium and at Mississippi State.

"The Tigers just didn't just beat these teams. They dominated two of the three (Oregon, West Virginia) without even trying run up the score," said Ron Higgins of The Commercial Appeal in Memphis.

All three were ranked at the time the Tigers played them.

"We have a real strong road personality," LSU coach Les Miles said. "I think there's some real confidence for this football team that no matter what the environment is, you know, we can play."

Oklahoma certainly hasn't struggled, with wins against Tulsa, at Florida State and Missouri.

Though Sooners linebacker Travis Lewis sort of predicted the demotion Saturday night after the Missouri game.

"We played like a 25th-, 30th-ranked team," he said. "We are not the No. 1 ranked team in the nation right now."

Losing the top spot in the polls after a victory isn't uncommon. It happened once last season and twice the season before.

For now, the Tigers' resume' has swayed voters.

The schedule doesn't let up much for LSU, though the Tigers do play at home the next two weeks against Kentucky (2-2) and No. 12 Florida (4-0).

No. 6 is Stanford, followed by Wisconsin and Nebraska. The seventh-ranked Badgers will welcome the eight-ranked Cornhuskers to the Big Ten on Saturday in Madison, as Nebraska plays its first game in its new conference.

Oregon is No. 9 and South Carolina is 10th.

No. 11 Virginia Tech hosts No. 13 Clemson in the Atlantic Coast Conference's biggest game of the upcoming. The Tigers moved up eight spots after beating Florida State 35-30 in Death Valley.

The Seminoles slipped 12 spots to No. 23 after its second consecutive loss.

No. 12 Florida hosts Alabama in the SEC's biggest game.

Texas A&M slipped six spots to No. 14 after losing to Oklahoma State.

Baylor and quarterback Robert Griffin III, who has 13 touchdown passes against only 12 incomplete passes this season, is 15th.

No. 16 South Florida is followed by Texas, Arkansas, Michigan and TCU.

The final five were Georgia Tech, West Virginia, which slipped six spots, Florida State, Illinois and Arizona State.

The Sun Devils slipped back into the rankings after snapping an 11-game losing streak to Southern California with a 43-22 victory.

USC was the only team to fall out of the rankings this week.

I love the fact that we have nothing but quality prospects left on our board! If we finish as strong as we should then this will be a hellavu class.

Chi, do you see what they were saying about D. Hunter last week?

Please expand on this. I'm very curious because I feel like he is severely underrated. He looks like he can turn into an elite pass rusher at the next level judging by his film. He is a bit raw but he's got great upside.

They spent a minute talking about him on recruiting nation. Saying that yes he is extremely raw and doesn't have good coaching right now per se, but could easily wind up being the best player in this class once the coaches here get a hold of him. Very high praise for his natural ability and his athleticism.

He plays in my sons district and the coaching at his school has always been bad as well as the team. We play them in a few weeks so I'll report back on how he looks in person.

ESPN sucks as recruiting coverage. The issue is the same issue for ESPN across the board now no matter what they cover, but it's exponentially greater in football recruiting; they only focus on the brand names, i.e. Patriots, Cowboys, Yankees, etc. In recruiting, that's big time recruits. The depth of their evaluations are hilarious. Anyway, they suck is all.

Thanks for re-enforcing how big it is to have ESPN crowing about your program and your recruits.

Yes, they do only cover brand names. Thanks in part to the coverage ESPN gives the SEC and it's teams, LSU is a brand name in college football and in recruiting.

The exposure gained from positive info on ESPN's website is much greater than all of the in-depth articles on Rivals, Scout and 24/7 combined.

I really don't know much about their evaluations because I don't pay for their premium content. I do read the free articles on it every day though and I'm sure most of the top recruits do also. I also expect these online articles to be followed up by mentions on ESPN and especially on ESPNU's high school and college coverage.

This is all free infomercials/education for not only the recruits, who may keep up with the Rivals, Scout and 24/7 sites, but also for their families and friends, who may not keep up as closely.

I am really happy ESPN includes LSU and the SEC in their "Big Team Bias". I wouldn't want it any other way.

P.S. College Football live came on 14 minutes ago on ESPNU. They have talked about nearly nothing but LSU passing OU in the AP poll. They just showed Tyrann Mathieu highlights again. Mathieu, the recruit Les offered before all of the other big programs got on board. The guy who made the first highlights on the 1st SportsCenter after ESPN's games Saturday night and had the SC guys saying he'd be playing on an NFL team soon.

It's just more "All LSU, All the Time." I love it.
