Thinking about taking my boat (25' Catamaran) out to the floaters this weekend and wanted to know if South Pass is in good shape or not. I remember hearing the stories about guys getting grounded after the mississippi was way up earlier in June. Anybody know?

It is definely silted in. However it's still navigable for your size boat. The shallowest spot I have found is about 2.5'. Just run on plane and more on the east side of center and you should have no problems.

Definitely safe if you're careful

Stay to the East side of the pass. Keep an eye on your depth finder. When/If it gets below 5', slow down till it gets deeper.

Dont trust the channel markers, some of them are in < 1' of water.

Just stay on thee East side. You'll be fine

There has been flats in south pass and at the end of south pass for years. Even before this high river that just passed. If you aren't sure just idle. Run a gound on a sand flat is not a fun thing to do.

same as everyone else has said. the east side (after #11) is generally a bit shallower but has a soft mud bottom and you don't have the risk of hitting any of the new sand bars. there is one green buoy about two miles from head of pass on the west side that is damn near on dry ground.

2 miles from head of passes? so the silting starts pretty far north then?

It's been since 2009 that I've run it in my boat...we didn't fish in 2010 before the Deepwater Horizon accident and then moved our boat to Texas as a result. We're now moving it back (co-owner is good buddy in BR) to Venice and will keep it there all winter. Anyway, from what I recall, when running out, the channel turns a little to the left after you clear the jetty, correct? Is that still the case?

Yeah. That's about right. That's the markers that are almost high and dry. Just stay east. Just stay east. Just stay east.

any of the cuts on the west side will have sand bars above or below. the buoy 2 miles in i believe was around franks crossing or the next cut south

the end of the jetty has somesort of a makeshift plywood sign now with no reflectors. the rocks will end a good 500 yards before the sign(thanks to gustav). same deal coming out hang a ese. only marker out there now is the old yellow rig that has been broken down.

Yes the buoy is near frank's ditch. To re-iterate it's on the west side, stay east and you are fine. In all honesty if you stay in the center for the most part in a cat you likely won't have any issues.

Thanks for all the info fellas. Yeah there aren't even channel markers out there anymore, just some kind of a wood sign marking an obstruction maybe and the old rig a few hundred yards from the end of the jetties. We never marked below 7 feet going out or coming in so it was pretty easy.

Fishing was great..found a 2x8 floating on a rip and pulled 8 wahoo off it. Also jumped in and shot a bull dolphin on a log nearby. Headed to Mars/Ursa for the evening and had a great blackfin bite but only managed 1 small yellow. There was zero current and almost no surface activity so we knew it would be tough. Also hooked a UFO that my buddy could never get turned...he started trying to horse it after 45 minutes and broke the line. We figure it was probably a 100+ yellow.

No pics of the bull...he was probably in the 15 - 20 lb range so nothing spectacular. We didn't really expect to run across anything holding dolphin so we didn't have much inshore tackle and didn't really play with them very long before I decided to hop in and shoot the big one. I literally shot him within 5 seconds of being in the water.

Haha yeah it is convenient I guess. It's not the first one I've shot and I wanted to find some more so I just handed the gun up to the guys on the boat. unfortunately I broke a band on the next shot and was down to 1 band on my Riffe Competitor 3, and it shot really slow with one band and I only managed to wound another mahi before giving up. There were dozens of tripletail on this log but all were small.
