David Toms wins 2011 Payne Stewart Award

I know it is football season and all but I wanted to post this on here.
The Payne Stewart Award is presented annually to a player sharing Stewart's respect for the traditions of the game, his commitment to uphold the game's heritage of charitable support and his professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct. Stewart, an 11-time winner on the PGA TOUR and World Golf Hall of Fame member, died tragically the week of the TOUR Championship in 1999.
"This is one of the best honors in golf, and I am truly grateful to be the recipient of the Payne Stewart Award," said Toms. "The fact that this recognizes so many different attributes is very humbling. I was fortunate enough to know Payne and play against him, and that makes this even more special. He was great to me when I was a young player and always helped me be at ease on the golf course. I will continue to do my by best to uphold his legacy."
The below link features highlights of his career and shows the clip of the crowd chanting "LSU LSU LSU" during his win at the Zurich. Great Video and really shows what a class act and great ambassador this guy really is.

Here is a link to the press conference announcement. Great comment toward the beginning about how David wants to be in Morgantown but he will be playing golf in ATL anyway.

Saw David Toms play at local golf course against Phil Mickelson in a Shell Wonderful World of Golf match with my dad several years back. It was great because the gallery was small and we were able to get close for every shot. He had LSU on his bag and I had LSU shirt on. We talked about LSU football in between a few shots. Very approachable and nice. Saw him again at the Tansitions in Tampa and he saw me with an LSU shirt on and made it a point to come over to the ropes and say something. Really respect him as person and golfer.

LSU needs to honor Toms on the field for the Florida game. I'm curious to hear how many golfers there are in the stadium...

After the 2001 sec championship season I was rocking my Lsu sec champ hat at Doral in Miami. I ran in to David Toms in one of the tour vans. We talked Lsu football for 30 min and he reached in to his bag and handed me 2 wedge heads with Lsu stamped on them and his initials on them. There isn't a classier more dedicated Lsu fan on the planet! This guy is all class and as good a role model as any kid could ever have.
