I didn't see this posted yet... some of you might find this interesting.
From the New York Times, a short history of our namesake, with some detailed anecdotes:
LINK
LSU is mentioned at the end.
It's a GREAT read.

I couldn't help chucking when I read this line:
Thanks for posting. Great article.
quote:2011 Tigers didn't fall far from the tree.
“I was actually afraid of them, afraid I would meet them somewhere and that they would do me like they did Tom Lane of my company; knock me down and stamp me half to death.”
Thanks for posting. Great article.

that was a great read. it does explain alot about how, til this day, most of us still have this type of instinct in our blood. especially the part about the whiskey.

soldier reported the Louisiana Tigers got down on their hands and knees 100 yards down the road and lapped the whiskey up like dogs as it ran by.

Why does it have to be a joke? Is this information you were born with? Was this common knowledge to everyone since 1900? People have to learn the info from somewhere, as you did.

I had a Louisiana History professor at LSU who did a whole class on the Louisiana Tigers.
Part of his story was that the Tigers were used as boogeymen all down the east coast to get children to do their chores, go to bed, etc.:
"If you don't do as you're told, the Louisiana Tigers will get you!"

I read the same author's book "Lee's Tigers," and it was really good, with the most entertaining portion addressing the formation of the fighting force and detailing their rowdy behavior on the way to Va.
A railroad engineer who was transporting some of the Tigers to Va. wrote something to this effect in his diary:
"With all of their drinking, and carrying on and singing of French songs, and fighting amongst themselves, it'll be a wonder if there any of them left to fight the Yanks."

Two of my great-great uncles were part of the Louisiana Tigers, Company I, 9th Louisiana Infantry, and fought at Antietam. One lost his arm and returned to St. Tammany Parish.

Obvious joke is obvious.
